Go Green By Kicking Your Cats To The Curb Just when you thought that you crossed everything off your list in your quest to be the squeaky greenest person possible, here's a new lifestyle change you may not have thought about before. Ditch your cats because they are responsible for the downfall of Mother Nature -- at least that's what one deeply opinionated person recently informed me. www.greenwala.com/profiles/517-Elizah-Leigh/blog/1771-Green-Your-Life-By-Kicking-Your-Cats-To-The-Curb-Um-Really Please take a look at the article link above and feel free to offer your feedback! Top Chef Episode Just watched Top Chef (Farm Policy episode) and there were so many things that turned my stomach... in the quickfire challenge they made crabs. The crabs were alive and crawling around and the chefs then began to hack them up, put them in the oven to bake while alive, amongst other gross things. Then the chefs went to an organic and humane" farm.. not sure if that makes me happy or sad. Anyone else see the episode? Thoughts? Post Date: 07/18/10, Replies: 3

MINK FARM RAID IN DONEGAL COALITION TO ABOLISH THE FUR TRADE - IRELAND ***PRESS RELEASE: MINK FARM RAID IN DONEGAL*** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT CAFT Ireland spokesperson: Laura Broxson – 086 8729 444 – www.naracampaigns.org "The recent release of mink from 'Rolf Anderson's Mink Farm' in Donegal has resulted in a frenzied mass hysteria over the claimed 'dangers' of mink on the loose. We want people to step out of this lunacy and actually think logically about the situation" says spokesperson for CAFT Ireland, Laura Broxson "Whoever liberated these mink from their cages had good reason to do so – fur farming is a barbarically cruel industry, and we fully support what has happened. These animals would have been turned into coats, and now they are free. If you were a mink, which life would you choose?" "This fur farm, even compared to the others in the country, is of a particularly sub-standard condition. By the farmers' own admission in recent media interviews, they still illegally keep 5 mink per cage – even though 1 mink per cage barely has enough room to turn around in. We have reported this to the Dept. of Agriculture and are eagerly awaiting their response on the matter." "The claims that sheep, horses – and even children – are at risk of a mink attack are just ludicrous. It is actually frightening how grown men and women can believe such uneducated nonsense." "Mink are part of the otter family – do people run in fear of otters too? No. So why are mink portrayed as invincible, man-eating beasts? It's ridiculous." "Unfortunately for mink, they seem to have also become the scapegoats for the decline of certain native species in Ireland – even in areas where there have never been fur farms. If there were no mink in the country, perhaps officials would have to acknowledge that pollution, destruction of habitats, hunting, and the over-use of pesticides are actually to blame for species failing to flourish." "What is also disturbing is peoples' eagerness to play 'God', by deciding which species they feel should live, and which should be killed – as shown by the Government's recent decision to sanction a mink cull. Who says mink are less important, or more of a threat to other animals, than any other species in the country? The U.K. has a wild mink population of about 40,000 – and it's not an issue. Nature always balances itself, it's humans who create problems." "The most conveniently forgotten fact in all of this is that fur farms should not exist in the first place. Animals are kept in horrendous conditions, they are fed liquefied fish organs which they have to lick through the bars of their cages, and when they are 6months old, they are gassed to death – 50 at a time, which results in many being merely unconscious, not dead, when they are skinned." "As a society, we have long since moved on from our neanderthal, knuckle-dragging ways – it's time the fur industry recognised that. They are a blood stain on this country that needs to be removed immediately." "The new programme for government has agreed to a phase-out ban on fur farming, set for completion in 2012 – but this is too far away. They need to be shut down now." Post Date: 03/12/11, Replies: 3

Petition Against Janet Jackson's Fur Line Hello people. :) As an animal lover and (now ex-)fan of Janet Jackson, I have been shocked about her decision to launch a fur line with Blackglama. She was always believed to be an animal lover, grew up around all types of animals, fed and loved them. According to PETA, she even spoke out against the wearing of fur in the past, so her decision has lead to a lot of questions among fans and animal lovers... questions she has never answered. At least not yet. This petition is still open, and there have been no recent reports about the launching of her fur line. Recently, few people have signed, but I would love to see the goal of 10,000 people reached. Please sign the petition for the sake of animals, whether you care about Ms. Jackson or not. It only takes a few seconds. Maybe she will think it over or give an explanation. www.thepetitionsite.com/4/janet-jackson-cancel-your-fur-line/ Post Date: 04/13/12, Replies: 3
Man stabbed to death by cockfighting bird http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-12393125 A man attending an illegal cockfight in California died after being stabbed in the leg by one of the birds, officials have said. The cock had a knife attached to its limb to take part in the gambling fight in Tulare County, central California. Jose Luis Ochoa, 35, was declared dead in hospital where he arrived some two hours after being injured. The coroner's report said he had suffered an accidental "sharp force injury" to his right calf. It was not immediately clear if a delay in seeking medical attention was a factor in the death. "I have never seen this type of incident," Sgt Martin King, who had worked in the sheriff's department for more than two decades, told the Bakersfield Californian on Sunday, when the incident happened. Other dead roosters and materials suggesting cockfighting were found at the location, reports said, but no arrests were made. Mr Ochoa, reportedly a regular participant in organised cockfights, had already been fined for owning or training an animal for fighting, according to court records cited by the newspaper. Though cockfighting is illegal in the US, California is a popular destination state for people involved in the sport as raising the gamecocks, organising matches and attending fights as a spectator are all classified as misdemeanours on the first offence, rather than more serious criminal offences in the state. Job/study w/t intention of helping animals Real title: A job or study with the intention of helping animal, environment and climate change Greetings, Let me introduce myself. I'm a Belgian student, soon to graduate as a master in geology. I started my studies with the intention of understanding the earth and its processes. During my studies I have come to know myself and my interests better. I already followed a lot of courses about climate, past climate and ecology, even doing my thesis about an environmental reconstruction. I now know what I want to do with my life but I'm having a very hard time deciding what to do and finding the right persons to solve all my questions. I'm hoping that I can expand my vision by posting here, and I of course hope that someone can help me. So what I would really want to do with my life. For starters, I am a veganist and I can't stand killing animals for the delight of pleasing your tastebuds for 10 seconds. The practices of the meat industry is wrong in my eyes and it would be better to eat less meat, not only for animal rights, but also for health reasons and for the environmental problems. Reducing meat and dairy intake would ideally play a very big role in my future job, either direct or indirect. Other than my big love for animals, I also love nature as a whole, and hate to see it destroyed by humans. My other big interests are nature, climate, environment and helping people (educating, making more conscious,..). I also love the palaeohistory and evolution of man, and the link between the past and the future. For example I like the fact man started eating meat because of necessity in the grasslands, but technology and knowledge now is more advanced so that eating meat is absolutely no requirement anymore. Saying this I also love (green) technology, problemsolving, inventing and aim to combine all my interests in one. Very important for my later job is enormous variation, a lot of travelling to distant countries and able to look at what I have accomplished. Basically it comes down to this point: I want to change the world.. for as much possible by a single man. I have some paths I am willing to take. (1) Either continue a study, for example get another masters degree about environment. (2) Try to start a phd. (3) Find a suitable job that honors my needs. If I start (1), then my job problem remains after the study ends. But still it could be good to start another study, although I don't quite know which one to do. The closest I can get to environmental studies in my country is: bio-engineer: environmental technologies. But that specifies about creating clean air, water and soil, and not really what I want to do. (2) would be possible, but the biggest problem is to find a promotor. Nowhere in my country can I find a person with interest in climate and environment concerning animals. (3) Recently I have started looking for jobs and I have come to realize I detest industry. Maybe because I have only heard personal stories of people in oil and chemistry business, but I don't see myself working in an industry where money is top priority. Other than industry, I don't know much. There are ngo's but it seems to me they rarely offer jobs and mostly rely on volunteers. Ideally I would be doing research about the consequences of meat and dairy on the environments or climate change, gathering evidence from all over the world, while educating people and saving animals and nature at the same time. I still have some months but it really starts to urge. Thank you very much for reading! (I pardon myself with possible errors and I realize I may have forgot some info, but you can always ask!) No happy cows... at this website: happycow.com.au The website above is an Australian manufacturer of LEATHER bags and accessories. I am appalled. I wrote to them, well him really, Justin A H Snyder. Asking him to change the name and my reasons why. I am sure as a community you are all aware why. He responded by directing me to this page...www.happycow.com.au/recycled-leather-bags-sustainable. he seems to be so deluded as to think that using OFFCUTS - not USED leather mind you. that he is free from creating or adding to demand. WE NEED TO ALL WRITE TO HIM please!. I cant stop people using leather or their offcuts....i wish i could. But i want people who are using these products to do so with a conscience, to know where and how their food and products are created, and to then make a decision based upon the facts. PLEASE HELP. numbers make a difference. I know this is a small fight and not directly related to welfare issues. but proliferation and misuses of terms such as cruelty free are an abomination. Spin misusing the meanings or inferred meanings like free-range and sustainable are wrong.here is the page for contacting him.www.happycow.com.au/contacts/ Post Date: 02/08/13, Replies: 3
Veteran vegans, I need your advice! *disclaimer: I DO NOT advocate or eat any kind of meat, poultry, or fish; I have not purchased any fur, wool, leather, product tested on animals etc since I was 14 (i'm 16)* Commercial factory farming vs. “organic” farming. By organic, I mean cows, goats, chickens and all farm animals are fed organic feed (cows are not feed grains but instead eat only grass), never given hormones or antibiotics, are allowed unlimited access to pastures, cows and goats are not milked more than what is healthy, and chickens are not induced to produce eggs by being kept in cages or surrounded by artificial lighting. The animals are treated humanely, with dignity, have the least amount of stress as possible and seem very content and relaxed. I’m curious what you think about this scenario, as there are diary and egg farms out there like this. Some of these include Horizons Organic and Organic Valley. I understand how commercially factory farmed animals are exploited and taken advantage of and I’m against it, yet the organic companies that I listed above are different, as these animals aren’t treated inhumanely and as machines. These companies have small family owned farms providing their products for them and follow Animal Welfare Standards. www.farmers.coop/producer-pools/animal-care-program/ I thoroughly researched the websites of both companies and there is plenty of information and proof (such as interviews with the farmers, videos, photos, etc)If you are vegan, I would like your insight on this topic. Would you still consider this taking advantage of an animal? Cruelty? I have visited many vegan forums and websites but most of them only talk about one side of the equation, which is commercial factory farming. The documentary that I watched, Vegucated, also looked only at this. I’m very curious about veganism and want to know as much as possible first hand. Do not take this as an insult or challenge, I really respect vegans! For the past few months, I have tried really hard to eat as vegan as possible, but then my family started questioning it and I had no answers. I really want to eat vegan for health and environmental reasons and I don’t want to eat any animal byproduct that has come from an animal who was treated cruelly and tortured. If I were to ever eat an animal byproduct, I would never eat it from a restaurant, I would probably only get it from the two providers listed above. I'm struggling with becoming a full-fledged vegan and I really want all the help and advice I can get. Any kind advice or information is appreciated, please no mean comments! "Horse meat scandal" I turned on the news which I never usually do. And I came across people absolutly furious about their beef burgers being "contaminated" with horse meat. I rang up my mum to ask what she thought of it (she eats meat) and she said it was disgusting, the same person who when I said she cared more about some animals than others, waived my accusation away. So does that mean she does not think that beef does not come from cow? I turned vegan about a year a go, and was vegetarian a few years before that. But even before all that, I knew that life was life and I can't see how people can't, or choose to block it out. "Horse meat scandal"? ever heard of the meat scandal? Anyone care to comment with ideas on how to open the eyes of people such as my mother? Or just share similar experiences? Melanie Joy calls it Carnism, but I can't figure out how to convice others from her video. www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vWbV9FPo_Q Post Date: 03/21/13, Replies: 3
Stray Animals in Europe Visiting Bulgaria few days ago I was extremely disturbed by the situation of stray animals on the streets. I did some research and realised that there are not that many (if any) charities that fight for the cause of these animals. There are some in Romania and some in Greece but apart from that, Eastern and Middle Europe are abandoned by any organisations who could help them. I would like to raise the awareness about the situation of stray dogs and cats. I have never in my life seen an animal who would be so scared of a human being, who instead of begging for food, would rather run away in fear of being tortured. These animals are walking the streets hungry and mutilated, and they are not spayed. My ambition is to be able to raise money or food donations and travel regularly to these countries to feed the strays. Moreover, I would love to get some vets involved who would be able to spay the strays instead of killing them. Also, this is a place where you can help me find homes for the stray cats and dogs! Since this is the first time I have ever took matter in my hands, I would really appreciate any tips and advice you can give me to make this work. Currently, I have a face book page but I'm also starting a society at my university. here is the link to the page: https://www.facebook.com/strayaware These animals are innocent and they have no choice but to live in the countries where they are treated like vermin. I believe ignoring the matter is not just inhuman. It's sick. Stop stray animals torture! Post Date: 06/26/14, Replies: 3

Foie Gras - Unfit for Consumption Friday, November 30, 2007 Groups Claim Foie Gras Unfit for Consumption US - The Humane Society of the United States, Farm Sanctuary, Animal Legal Defense Fund, NYU Student Animal Legal Defense Fund, and several individuals filed a legal petition with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA's) Food Safety and Inspection Service calling on the agency to issue new regulations declaring foie gras a diseased product that is unfit for human food under the federal Poultry Products Inspection Act (PPIA). Foie Gras The petition includes hundreds of pages of supporting documentation citing statements from leading avian veterinarians in the United States explaining how the production of foie gras causes ducks and geese to contract a fatty liver disease known as "hepatic lipidosis." The petition is also supported by a recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences indicating that the consumption of foie gras may pose health risks to a significant portion of foie gras consumers. "Foie gras is a cruel, diseased product that has no place in the human food supply," said Jonathan R. Lovvorn, vice president for Animal Protection Litigation with The Humane Society of the United States. "Federal law requires USDA to protect consumers from diseased poultry products, and that is exactly what this petition asks the agency to do." Facts according to The Humane Society of the United States Foie gras is made from the intentionally diseased, fattened livers of ducks and geese. To produce force-fed foie gras, producers force-feed birds an unnatural amount of food through a pipe thrust down their throats until their livers expand to ten times their natural size. This force-feeding can cause painful bruising, lacerations, sores, organ rupture, and even death. The Poultry Products Inspection Act requires that poultry products be condemned if they consist of any "filthy, putrid or decomposed substance or is for any other reason, unsound, unhealthful, unwholesome, or otherwise unfit for human food." Chicago, California, and more than a dozen countries—including the United Kingdom, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Israel, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and Switzerland—have taken legislative action on the issue of foie gras and cruel force-feeding practices. Even the Pope has condemned it. A 2004 Zogby poll showed that 77 percent of Americans believe the practice of force-feeding ducks and geese for foie gras should be banned.
