| Most urgent un-addressed animal issue? I'm a California resident and an academic with a business background. Much of what I've published is related to the human-animal relation, and since I'm a critical scholar, my work openly advocates for less or non-use of products that exploit and destroy non-human animals. I've resigned my position at the college (effective July 2014), and I'm taking my energy and advocacy for this issue into the not-for-profit sector. I've done extensive research on the field to see where my energies might be most productive. I'd like to include in that research your thoughts. If you have a moment, please respond to this prompt: What do you see as the most urgent animal welfare/rights/liberation issue (or issues) that is NOT being addressed (or is under-addressed)? Really, these don't have to be long responses. I'd just like more input, and I thought the Happy Cow forum would be a great place to ask! Thank you, in advance, for your thoughtful responses--I look forward to reading them! my best, Cathy Post Date: 11/08/13, Replies: 7 | ||
| Too many dogs? I am in a situation. I have two german shepherds which I adore and I saved a puppy from the shelter back in July. Although I feel good, I can't get my mind off of the ones at the shelter on death row. I came across another puppy there at this moment and want to save her but I have no time and space for the 4th dog. I feel so aweful and feel terrible leaving her there. I also feel extremely sad to visit the shelter seeing so many wonderful animals in cages that will die. I work 9 hours a day with every other friday off, and don't have the time for a 4th dog. What do I do? I feel that once I bring another one, I will lack the care and attention the others deserve. I am told by my family that I can't save them all! Help. | Earthlings... To Watch or Not to Watch? So I have tried to shun Earthlings for an entire year now because I know that it would emotionally scar myself to the point of where i will most likely perceive every omnivore as 'evil' (not the greatest mentality to have, but i'm working on it!) But anyways, my logic for not watching Earthlings was 'I'm already vegan, and doing everything I can to not support the meat & dairy industry, so why torture myself by watching it?' But then recently it occurred to me that perhaps I'm being selfish in thinking that. A strong part of me believes that we all owe it to these animals to at least witness the pain they physically endure every single second of their lives. Consequently, I am strongly considering forcing myself to watch Earthlings, in its entirety. No closing my eyes, or looking away, but to intently watch and process the exact torturous procedures these animals undergo. I feel like the only con is that it will negatively affect me psychologically... and the pros are: it will definitely make my ethical stance even stronger, educate me on the practices of factory farms visually and possibly motivate me further to speak up to people. Anyone else feel this way? Or maybe even the contradictory? Post Date: 07/26/15, Replies: 7 | ||
| Mesmerised. Flying slaves. Documentary. Hello fellow vegans and animal rights advocates. Let me borrow your attention please. This is the vegan movie I'm filming now. And I need your financial aid. Mesmerised. Flying slaves. Documentary about cruelty. Mesmerise (verb) – to hold the attention of someone entirely: to interest or amaze someone so much that nothing else is seen or noticed: to hypnotize. Why do we call our movie “Mesmerised. Flying slaves.”? At first it’s hard to find the connection between hypnosis and swiftlet farming. But if we look closer, an incredible cruelty arises. Digital audio hypnotizes are used to hack bird's communication system and send false messages to the birds to force them behave as a farm’s owner wants. Artificially created audio mixes trick birds to settle in a certain place or even make them reproduce. Cruel enough? What about artificially created hormones and pheromones sprayed to reinforce desirable behavior of swiftlets? What do they farm them for? Nests. Seriously, swiftlets nests. Hundreds tons per year with a retail price up to $10000 per kg. And a single nest weights about 10 gram. Do the math yourself. They call it “the caviar of the East”. Hypnotized birds with falsely induced mating behavior build nests over and over again. That's why we call it Mesmerised. Flying slaves. Please give me a hand to make it happen. Back the campaing or share please. Together we're changing the world right now. https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/1673383?ref=gogo__fblk__13480875 Post Date: 03/17/16, Replies: 7 | ||

| kindly killing???????? Okay, so it's been a while since I have brought up a topic, so first I'm going to say Hello to all you Veggies that I have missed  Okay now to get to the issue ……..mice! To be more specific, dead mice and the way they were killed. I understand we cannot have them running around and by all means I don't want them running around, nor do I usually care for them, but I was wondering if there was a way to get rid of them without the harsh and quite frankly unpleasant way of trapping and having to see a mangled mouse in the morning or poisoning them and having to smell it, where ever it may be dead lying somewhere or in something. To be honest it creeps me out, Of Corse I love animals but …mice… rats really??? I dont want to kill them but they are not welcomed to my office or soy puffs,Help!!!! | What is an 'animal?' Various 'isms' can get somewhat wooly at the extreme edges. OK, I think that we might all agree that we actively do not want to become consciously involved in exploiting either animals, birds, and fish. Such might even say include germ carrying flies or maggots. But what about bacteria? If we get bad bacteria in our systems we all surely want it out? But what about the exploitation of good bacteria, say in the productiuon of a scar reducer such as 'nattokinase?' Hmmmm........ Post Date: 09/05/14, Replies: 6 | ||
| Italian Restaurants that don't serve veal I really enjoy pasta. It's my favorite food and I love some good veggie pasta and wine and a great Italian restaurant. However, I recently made the decision I don't want to eat at restaurants that serve veal, and unfortunately so many Italian restaurants do. So I thought I'd see if I could ask the all-knowing crowd about Italian restaurants that do not have veal on the menu? I'm in the Bay Area but I'm sort of interested in generating of list of veal-free Italian restaurants all over the USA, if not the world. Thanks! Post Date: 01/19/17, Replies: 6 | ||
| “Animal Welfare Approved” Beef! Dark humor. If only this was just a joke... Every single day *millions* of individuals, millions of PEOPLE whose sole crime was being unfortunate enough to not have been born human are *murdered* after having first been enslaved, tortured, raped. There is no excuse for this. It isn't about survival or necessity. While we may not be able to make all of this horror and injustice stop right away, *all* of us can immediately take major steps towards righting these wrongs. To start: Go Vegan Now. Animal Liberation is the only "humane" option. http://www.theonion.com/articles/we-raise-all-our-beef-humanely-on-open-pasture-and,30983/ Post Date: 06/21/14, Replies: 6 | ||
| Human superiority? "We live on a planet inhabited by millions of species, one of which, under the illusion of superiority, denies all others even a basic right to life. This mindset justifies the indiscriminate killing, in horrible ways, of our neighbors and kin...to the tune of millions daily." Post Date: 02/20/16, Replies: 6 | ||
| Turkeys "You throw them and I'll hit them" Read this - www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=499981&in_page_id=1770 Excerpt - But it's traditional, isn't it? Actually, the Christmas turkey is far less of a tradition than you may think. As food historian Ivan Day says: "The earliest Christmas menu on record dates from 1660 - 134 years after the bird was first brought to this country from America - and it does feature turkey, but only alongside goose, swan and heron. "It is goose that Tiny Tim gets to eat at the end of Dickens' A Christmas Carol, the story that inspired the modern festive celebration." Turkey became ubiquitous only after the 1950s because geese were not suited to new intensive farming techniques, but turkeys were. Frozen food was fashionable, and turkey was the festive food that worked best in the freezer. So the new supermarkets pushed it aggressively and turkey became 'traditional'. And tasteless, says Mr Day: "The modern lump of frozen concrete tastes like a genetic modification of balsa wood." The industrial-scale production of the modern domestic turkey has led to a number of well documented abuses. Perhaps the most shocking example emerged at a Bernard Matthews turkey plant last year, where two workers were filmed playing baseball with live birds. One said to the other: "You throw them and I'll hit them," then used a pole to batter the birds around the room for sport. An isolated example of two sadistic workers? Not so, according to the lawyer who represented them in court when they faced charges of animal cruelty (you may not be surprised to hear that they escaped jail sentences). Norwich magistrates heard that the men's attitudes were part of the 'culture' at the plant, where they worked in 'appalling' conditions. Post Date: 06/18/08, Replies: 5 | ||
| Animal Testing Supposedly there is the Nation Animal Welfare Bill (NAW) since 2005, the purpose being to 'promote humane, responsible and accountable care, protection and use of domestic animals, livestock, wildlife and animals kept for scientific purposes, and the standards required to achieve this end, and for related purposes'. It's not a law; it's simply a code at this time. I've heard arguments that animals aren't treated as badly as portrayed on extremist websites such as Peta.com, regarding NAW. I disagree and still believe that animals are given virtually no rights despite the efforts of NAW, and are still greatly harmed during testing; scientists disregard this bill and simply DON'T CARE! Does anyone else have an opinion about animal testing and animal rights during the process? Post Date: 11/15/08, Replies: 5 | ||
| Panting Cat...????????????????? I've been doing on line searching about panting cats. why? Well, an isolated incident occurred shortly after moving to this house when Indy Prid was playing with the lazer pointer for a bit and when I brought the red dot onto my arm and slowly down and stopped it, his eyes got huge, his teeth reared and he hissed at it loudly (he's not a hisser) and then panted for about 20 seconds or so. Well, here I am, relaxing on my couch after a shower, checking email before bed and I hear him panting again. This time he's sitting in my dad's chair by the window. He's done. I wonder how often this occurs? The window is open, yes, but I don't see anything unusual to my human sensory make up. He did insist on staying in the bathroom while I showered, as always, and it got pretty steamy. So far I haven't seen anything that would lead to a concern. However does anyone else have any experience with a panting cat? If so, is there anyone who's experience of such had any conclusions of an illness or condition that was harmful? He doesn't show any signs of illness... very active and healthy and happy and silly as usual. He's just over 8 months old, a good sturdy flea free and worm free MainCoon (discovered to be), and an indoor kitty (happily now that we have a house with ROOM:)) anyway, even if no problems it would be cool to know if others have had a panting cat as well. meow Post Date: 09/16/08, Replies: 5 | ||

| Cruelty Free Dog Food Dilemma! Hi guys! After being vegetarian for quite some time, my husband and I have become vegan this year. So far, we love it! We feel healthy and great about the choices we are making. I've even started checking all the brands of non food products we buy to make sure they are cruelty free. The only dilemma I have been having with this is my dogs! I have two Aussie mixes, 10 months and 2 years old. My two year old has allergies to wheat, soy, and corn so it has always been difficult to find food for him. I've wanted to switch him to the raw diet and have had lots of suggestions for "cruelty free" all natural meats and raw dog foods but I don't really feel like buying meat at all is cruelty free. I am a major crazy dog lady and am actually studying dog nutrition right now so I want to make sure they are getting all the vitamins they need and are eating a well rounded diet. Does anyone have any insight on this? Or have you had a similar dilemma? I've read a few things about people making their dogs vegan but I am worried this will not be good for their health long term. Is this a situation where I will just have to do the best I can to buy cruelty free meat? My husband and I also have to stay somewhat on a budget during the month so if there is a budget friendly alternative that would make it even better! Thanks for reading and have a great day! | I would like to meet activists Who is a vegetarian activist? I live in Missouri, the beef capital of the USA. The land used to be used for crop farming mostly for dairy cows and a lot of people picked the corn and ate it but all the small Grade A barns are old and abandoned and the land is just used for Beef cattle. I believe greed is mostly the reason. A field of beef cattle will bring a lot of money when sold. Right now there is a rush. The cattle prices are high and trucks are moving many loads each day. There are many sale barns scattered around the country. I personally have to smell cow and hog [censored] at any random time. The ecoli and bacteria in my house with the windows closed. My head hurting in my sinuses. I have to be careful not to let my food touch the counter top because of the ecoli and bacteria on everything. I have to spray the house down in the middle of the night. I wake up to the stinch of hog suffication or cow [censored]. It costs for extra bowls for the cats and my dog because of the ecoli and natural air freshener. I can not open the windows and I have to pay for the air conditioner to run until the temperature gets cold outside in the fall. Not from the road but from one hauler who will not park his truck at the stockyards and drive his car home several times a day or just wait a few minutes for the next load. Do you know any activists who want to stop or slow the slaughter of cattle and hogs? I would like to meet personally with one or more of them. Post Date: 07/13/14, Replies: 5 | ||
| What animal are you wearing? I've been an animal activist all my life. Recently a friend and I decided to do something about it. We did our research and couldn't believe what goes on in the fashion industry! Every year nearly 50 million animals are brutally killed in the name of fashion! They are shot, beaten to death or even skinned while their hearts are still beating. All this only to be processed into a fashion product that decorate glossy uptown retail displays. Sanctuary Asia is attempting to reach out to young, impressionable minds and sensitise them against this cruelty. Have a look at the video that we have created. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LftPzI56wPc If you feel this is a cause you would like to support, please share the video with your friends and family to help shed light on the suffering of millions of animals. | Taiwan Temples Force-Feeding Pigs Activists call on temple to stop cruel animal practices CHAMPION: A coalition of animal rights activists urged Master Temples to stop the practice of force-feeding pigs to enter them in a `divine pig' contest By Meggie Lu STAFF REPORTER Saturday, Dec 01, 2007, Page 2 The Asian Coalition for Farm Animals (ACFA) yesterday urged Master Temples (祖師爺廟) in Taiwan to terminate animal cruelty in religious rites. The coalition, consisting of animal protection groups from Taiwan, Indonesia, South Korea and the UK, told a press conference in Taipei that Master Temples should stop force-feeding pigs and entering them in "divine pig" contests. Master Temples worship the Clearwater Master (清水祖師), a legendary general named Chen Chao-ying (陳昭應) who led the Han people in defending their homeland during the Song Dynasty. The contest is a tradition that rewards a gold medal to owners of the heaviest pig at annual Master Temple prayer ceremonies, Environmental and Animal Society of Taiwan (EAST) president Wu Hung (朱增宏) told the media. The winning pig, or "divine pig," is then slaughtered in public "while fully conscious" and offered to the Master, Wu Hung said. "To achieve the status of a `divine pig,' the pigs are force-fed for up to two years and confined in pigpens that are so small they can hardly turn to ensure minimum movement," Wu Hung said, adding that champion pigs weigh up to 600kg -- six times the normal body weight for pigs. "We are by no means preaching against traditional religious ceremonies," said Amy Firth, campaign manager of the World Society for the Protection of Animals [UK]. "We are saying that there are better ways to show respect to the Master than sacrificing the well-being of a life." Wu Hung said that of the 118 temples they talked to, only three have held the contest in recent years. "Sansia's (三峽) Master Temple in Taipei County is the only one that holds the contest annually," he said. "We earnestly plead with them to end it," he said. After the press conference a parade of ACFA volunteers boarded a bus to Sansia's Master Temple to offer them "an alternative way to respect God" -- a colorful, life-sized, smiling pig made of cardboard and decorated with flowers and candy, Wu Hung said. They were met, however, by Sansia's police force and local government officials, who blocked the parade's entrance to the temple, saying they were in violation of the Assembly and Parade Law (集會遊行法), said Wu Hung. "The officials told us to respect local traditions and refused the cardboard pig," he said. "However, we received some local cheers, and in the end we went into the temple to offer flowers and candy to the Master to pay our respects," he said. Post Date: 12/21/07, Replies: 4 | ||
