  • Friendly service, tasty food!

After reading the negative reviews for the original Mae Deli, we were rather apprehensive about visiting the second one a few days after it opened. We could not have been more pleasantly surprised. The service in particular was some of the best we have ever come across, the staff are extraordinarily friendly. The person serving us (Harriet) was superb, and also vegan, which is always reassuring. She was really helpful, especially for checking which cakes were suitable for coeliacs. Even the chap collecting plates etc was super-friendly. I was expecting the food to be good, but it was better than I had hoped. We tried a number of things we would not normally combine, which I am now keen to try at home. Portions were good and the price was reasonable, especially for London. Ella does use honey in her books, but none of the food on offer when we were there had honey in it. There were 2 types of cake which were certified gluten free, the recipes having been changed recently to accommodate coeliacs, not just those avoiding wheat. We ended up eating 2 cakes each, which were both excellent (I make very good cakes myself, so this is praise indeed). Although the Mae Deli does serve a small amount of meat and fish, this is clearly an optional extra, and kept well out of the way from the main offerings. There was a long queue out of the door for takeaways at one point, which is always a good sign! In short, this is now one of our favourite places, and we can't wait to go back.
