- Organic, veggie and vegan
Whole wheat pastas, farro, and gnocchi topped with a variety of veg-friendly sauces are on the dinner menu at this casual, East Village restaurant , but for me the salads were the stars: inventive combos of ingredients, seasonal organic produce, light and delicate dressing. Vegan and gluten-free options are clearly marked, there are several veg-based soups and starters, and the pastas are hearty and rustic, such as ravioli with walnut sauce or pesto lasagna with creamy béchamel. Many different pasta types (penne, tagliatelle ) can be ordered with a range of fresh, uncomplicated sauces of fresh tomatoes, herbs , artichokes , pine nuts and for ovo-lacto diets, home made mozzarella, tangy pecorino or Parmesan. A good selection of organic wines and a tantalizing dessert menu are available. Service is attentive and quick, the atmosphere is tranquil and friendly and I noticed a steady stream of mainly single diners and sippers taking advantage of happy hour , seated at the wide front counter. Prices are medium range for downtown Manhattan--$40 per person for a glass of wine, starter or salad, a main course and tip. The restaurant accepts cash or AMEX only, so be prepared , if you want a fresh, organic , rustic (and not touristy fake ) Italian meal with plenty of veg options.
