- A little gem
We found this little restaurant by accident - how lucky were we! We were heading to another vegetarian restaurant nearby, which was randomly closed and happened upon La Gran Manzana on the way back to the bus. Small, with great staff and a homely atmosphere, it serves a varied and tasty menu del dia (daily set menu) for just 50 pesos. What we particularly liked was that the dishes are traditional Mexican, with a vegetarian/vegan twist. So often vegetarian food in Mexico is international, but here it is authentic and often regional. It is popular with locals and families for breakfast and lunch and is spotlessly clean. There are two choices for every course of the set menu except dessert, so we had one of each. All were delicious and portion sizes were generous. The staff are lovely and speak very little English, but we got by with our bad Spanish and some gestures amid lots of laughing. It's a way outside the centre, but easy to get to by bus, or taxi and so worth the trip. The menu was mostly vegan, though the dessert was a milk based pudding. The staff are very aware of vegetarian/vegan requirements, so just ask for a vegan alternative. It's just a shame we found it on our last day in Puebla!
