Nice Thai restaurant, quite heavy on meat, with a small vegetarian section in the menu. No vegan labeling, so I inquired for vegan options up front and received quite a fast reaction by email, saying that all vegetarian dishes in the menu were suitable for vegans except no. 93 (Thod Man Khao Pod). When I placed my order in the restaurant I mentioned that I would like a vegetarian dish without fish sauce, oyster sauce or shrimp paste anywhere in the ingredients (experience with various Thai restaurants thought me to stress this out). The waitress seemed quite confused, saying that when those ingredients were being left out the food won't be tasty. Then she asked a colleague of hers for help. The colleague said that those ingredients won't be used in my dishes and that the first waitress was just a temporary help who did not know. Hm. The dish I ordered was nicely arranged and it was quite good. But indeed, just leaving out some components makes it somewhat less tasty than it could be - compared with some great Thai dishes I had in a vegan restaurant in Bangkok. But at least there were no animal ingredients in it, and it was fresh. I do wish however that more Thai chefs would look, for example, at the great vegan Thai cookbook of May Kaidee to get some inspiration about alternative spicing...
