  • friendly tasty jay restaurant in Chumphon

I was given the address and directions to Jay Sep by the owner of Easy Power (another vegetarian restaurant a few streets away) and am so very glad I went there! Jay Sep is located on the same street as Jay House - I mention that as I'm not sure I have placed the location marker accurately. If you take a look at the photos, you will easily be able to recognize the front of the restaurant. I was welcomed into this little place during a hot January afternoon, the restaurant is small and cosy, the kitchen area clean and organized. I couldn't figure out what to order, although there are photos all over the place, so t's easy to point and order. However, I'm not a fan of the mock meat so prevalent in Jay style outlets, but omitting it was no problem, nor was simple communication - so everything was relaxed and stress free. The first thing I ordered was a noodle soup - first of all, I had to figure out how to explain what 'noodles' were! After that hurdle, the owner and another girl set about making a tasty, hot, slightly spicy noodle soup that tasted fabulous. I couldn't figure out where the beautiful purple colour had come from (beetroot? See photo) - if anyone knows, please leave the answer in your comments. In any case, this was a huge bowl of noodle soup which I thoroughly enjoyed. (cost was about 35BHT) Communication was at times a little confusing, however, the owner seemed unfazed by my request to omit the fake meat items and we muddled through a simple conversation and a tasty meal. The next dish was stir-fried noodles and mushrooms, in a light sauce - also made to order, hot and very tasty indeed. I've also enclosed a photo of this dish - another rather large portion (about 30BHT) Although feeling pretty full at this moment, I quite fancied some kind of fresh salad, also made to order, a SPICY/tangy paste made in the wooden mortar and mixed with apples, tomatoes and peanuts - tasty stuff, unfortunately my eyes were bigger than my stomach and I simply couldn't finish even half of it... In total, the three dishes came to 105THB, which I think is very reasonable. Ice and filtered water provided free of charge and although there is no huge rush of people, there were customers popping in all the time I was there. One last thing, I don't have the language skills to understand if this was completely vegan or mainly vegetarian with a few vegan items. It would be great if someone with better language skills and understanding can help figure this out:)
