  • excellent vegan food in the centre of Yangon

This is a great new, friendly vegan place a short walk from Sule Pagoda and the downtown area, slightly closer to the Merchant Road end of 29th Street. Opening hours are from 07:30 to 20:00, every day. I stumbled upon this spot quite by chance: there are two bright yellow banners outside with menus that invited me into a quiet and clean little seating area. The owner, Geeta, is an English-speaking Burmese lady with Nepali origins who also lived in Bangkok for many years; she is really eager to make fresh, tasty, wonderful food. There is a fixed menu, but many of the curries change every day. If the restaurant is not busy, the owner will sometimes sit and chat and also offers free refills of dahls, curries and rice if you need. I was really impressed that the owner was so committed to keeping her restaurant as completely vegan as possible, absolutely no eggs or butter, meat, cheese or fish in the food. The only two concessions here are milk in the ginger masala tea and yoghurt in the lassi (vegans please note!) The owner is also aware of vegetarian/vegan diet and keen to promote a healthy menu. I have been there several times over three days, including breakfast. Each time, the food has been very tasty and prepared to order (the curries are obviously made earlier, but the rotis, dosas, puris etc are all light, hot and fresh). For the breakfast dosa (or dosai as it's called here) there are actually TWO dosai served, which is great value and helps set you up for the day Regarding breakfast, I used to wander through the streets about 08:00, while the city was slowly getting busy, stop here to have some breakfast and hot tea, and then was ready to do some exploring and sightseeing. There is no alcohol served here, but plenty of drink options - I think a fresh lime juice or something would be just right here, especially for people who don't like fizzy drinks. Again, vegans please note: there is yoghurt based lassi and milk based tea served here, but apart from this the entire food menu is entirely vegan - a really rare find in Yangon and Myanmar, especially for those of us who do not like fake meat style food. I am so glad to have found such a lovely little place in Yangon, with excellent vegan food available throughout the day, it is thoroughly recommended and I will miss it when I leave Yangon.
