  • salads that pack a punch

when the occasional salad craving strikes, i head to great food hall in pacific place, admiralty. it's one of the most comprehensive and generous salad bars i know of in hong kong, charging not by number of items but by how much can be stuffed into a bowl (hkd63 for a medium, hkd72 for a large). cheaper salads can be found elsewhere, but here the salads pack a punch. yesterday i had a medium bowl consisting of spinach, lettuce, rocket, some other leafy green, julienned carrot, black beans, lentils, cannellini(?), onion, roasted garlic, artichoke, broccoli, cauliflower, beetroot and capers. without a doubt i'd hit my five-a-day target. food has been fresh on all visits and staff always friendly, even when i try to overstuff the bowl. while meats and dairy are among the salad options, as a vegetarian i'm more than happy with the veggie options on offer. the only problem for vegans might be the suitability of dressings, though it's pretty obvious which are vegan-unfriendly, eg honey mustard, yoghurt. i've contacted them through their website with a suggestion to label those that are vegan and hope they will look into it. if you don't feel like choosing, they have pre-mixed salads and sandwiches available, some vegetarian, and discounted after a certain time of day.
