- Family Run, Fabulous Food
I first went to Asmara when there was an African exhibit at the Portland Museum of Art, as part of the experience. I was absolutely impressed with the food, and the small family-run restaurant. The injera bread was served to all of us at the table, after being provided with wet napkins to wash our hands. Those who ordered meat were served on a separate injera and plate than those of us who were vegan or vegetarian. The dishes were excellent, the bread was so good I bought teff flour and learned a recipe. Their fresh squeezed lemonade is a total treat. I loved the red lentils, but the second and third times we went there I discovered that I loved the greens even more. I have only ever been there at lunch time, or early afternoon. There are very few tables, maybe enough to seat 25 people, so I can't attest to evening wait time. They do serve meat, but they seem to be very aware of keeping things separate for those of us who do not want animal products in our food.
