  • A bit chaotic but good!

We went down to the Veg bar for a special punk and pizza night. I was quite excited by the prospect of a punk friendly vegan bar finally being established in london. I was amused to realise it is situated a few yards from an old squat that one of the legendary South London Pizza Punk Day events was many years ago, maybe Tulse Hill and pizza are meant to be? Not so! Despite the kitchen being open till 10.30pm (not 11pm as Happy cow has it) there were no pizza's left at 8.45pm! Worse still my first two choices off the menu were out too! The place was not rammed or even busy so I wonder what "management" were doing in preparation for this evening!? We had cycled from hackney in hope of a pizza to challenge the supremacy of the Black Cat Cafe fayre and were a tad dismayed. Luckily the chef appeared and took a genuine interest in my special nightshade free requests and some time later (not quick) I got an excellent version of one of the dishes on the menu personally adapted for me. The juices on offer were only very cheap bog standard bar style ones which was a shame. Vegan food should be accompanied by a healthy liquid option or two! So mixed feelings. The juice took half an hour to travel the 4 metres from the bar to our table. The menu was mostly unavailable. Someone - a manager I think - tried to take my - only two thirds finished - plate away whilst I was chatting with a friend! The food when it did come however was great, well mine was. Others used the word "good" with little enthusiasm but I was pleased with my "special". Lets hope the chef can maintain that level of commitment and that the organisation improves . Still great to see this place open let's hope it does well. Hopefully after my next visit I'll give it a better rating.
