- AMAZING, do not miss!!
Pizza Vegana is the product of a vegan (people and dogs) cooperative who have opened up the lower level of their building in Palermo to create an amazing, positive space full of goodwill. They're literally inviting anyone who would like to try vegan pizza into their home (while being quite professional about it -- it's clean and well-equipped as a restaurant), and we felt like we were friends with the staff and other guests by the time we left. It was the most wonderful meal I've had in a while, and we live in the vegan paradise of San Francisco. It is absolutely the place to be if you are vegan in Buenos Aires. We found the white doors at the address provided and noticed telltale pizza slices on a little sign by the doorbell, so we knew we were in the right place. There isn't a sign out front but you can definitely find the place on your own. Once inside, there are three casual sections for eating: the main room, beerhall-style large picnic tables treated as communal for small groups (we heard many tips about vegan spots in Bs As shared and friendships formed); the back room, ideal for a large group to have their own space; and the garden, smaller tables tucked among plants for a magical atmosphere. A few happy dogs live here, there's good-quality free wifi, and (get ready): FREE WATER. That's right, "Agua Libre" (and gratis, but more importantly the idea of water being freely available for everyone). Could it get any better? Sure! The walls are covered in murals, positive "go vegan!" messaging, and I noticed a "Monsanto: promised vs. reality" poster in the bathroom. The people (and dogs) are all incredibly friendly, kind and welcoming -- it's a relaxed place, so rather than prompt service, expect more like going to a friend's house for dinner. There's a small shelf with some information, including local yoga and aerial arts lessons and a pro-parks and animal rights petition. In addition to pizza and empanadas, they offer very affordable organic vegan wine, beer and other fun drinks, and a banana ice cream dessert. Finally, the food!! Pizza is made with organic whole wheat crust and "paparella", mozzarella made from potatoes. All is whole foods plant based, affordable and accessible foods. And DELICIOUS! Verdolaga (pesto) and Cuatrochi (4 cheese) were my favorite but all the pizzas and the faina (garbanzo flour cake common in Argentina) we tried were so tasty. I'd eat here every night, and will be making potato cheese at home. GO! NOW!!
