- Best place in world heritage listed town
We spent four days in Ouro Preto. This is an amazing town. It has been listed as a world heritage spot. If you are visiting Belo Horizonte then it's only a short drive or bus trip to Ouro Preto (about two hours). There are many tourists here and many places to eat but no dedicated vegan/vegetarian places. Cafe and Cia was by far the best we found. It is a pay by weight buffet and they have a lot of variety. They do serve meat but there are many salad choices as well as rice and beans and a couple of cooked vegetables such as sweet potato and wild spinach. It's very clean and if you sit up the back section you get a great view out the window. You can ask them what is vegetariano and sem leite (pronounced sin lechee meaning without milk - a very important phrase if you are a vegan in Brasil along with sem frango, without chicken, sem carne, without meat) The staff don't speak English but understand the above. The salads were all fresh and a lot of variety. No vegan deserts however so get some fruit on your plate if you have a sweet tooth.
