  • Off The Beaten Track, GZ-style.

Hong Shan Su [censored] is a worthy addition to anyone's list of potential destinations for meat- and dairy- free dining in GZ. A little off the beaten track - it will require (gasp!) a 10-15 minute walk from the nearest MTR or bus stop - and resembling the other local eateries along this section of South Road, the potential is there for the first-time visitor to miss it. However, the unassuming appearance belies the wholesomeness of the food therein, which is served buffet-style in the main dining area (as this space is not too large, we were obliged by the host who set up extra tables for our group on the street outside). The food is a familiar assortment of vegetable, tofu/beancurd, and mushroom dishes with both rice and noodles available to accompany. As it is self-service, you can pile on as much as required, and it seems acceptable to go for seconds (one would assume, however, that leaving food uneaten on your plate is a faux pas). The price is cheap, even by local Chinese eaterie prices, so if you are feeling flush you can 'gift' a meal to low-income and old diners when you pay.
