- Between food and art
Walking into De Culinaire Werkplaats is like entering an artist's studio rather than a restaurant. After a warm welcome from the hosts, we're shown to our table and the "concept" is explained- 5 courses based around a theme. In this case it's Amsterdamned?, capturing the love-hate relationship between the hosts and the city wher they have lived and created food/art for several years. The food is of a very high quality, and wonderfully creative - from the appetiser of lentil flatbread, to the coffee-shop inspired dessert, via Marrocan gay falafels (to represent the city's gay pride parade on the city's canals), dim sum parcels to represent the city's Chinatown, and a few other treats in between. Drinks are help-yourself, and you pay what you want for the food. It's not fast food (5 courses take almost 3 hours), but the creativity and atmosphere mean that there is never a dull moment.
