  • Great options for a chain

I rarely go to chain restaurants, but when I'm on campus and have limited options for lunch, I like Flat Top. They have a huge selection of strifry bowl items, including the biggest non-meat protein selection I've ever seen. On any given day they may have quinoa, tofu, tempeh, "mushroom meat," seitan, and more! All at the same time! Add your own vegetables and rice or noodles, and pick from a variety of sauces -- all labeled with ingredients. You then have the option of add-ons to your bowl, like lettuce wraps, or bread of egg (for the vegetarians), and can indicate you have an allergy with the color-coded sticks that you add to your bowl before they stir-fry it. Bowls with the "allergy" stick are cooked in a separate wok instead of on the grill top, so your food doesn't touch a surface where meat is being cooked. You can order one bowl or do "all you can eat" and go back to try different combinations. Now that I think about all of my experiences at Flat Top, they have the largest number of vegan options in town since you can make so many combinations of bowls. They also give discounts to students with the I-Card, so you can get lunch for under $10. My main complaint is that lunchtime on campus is a circus. You have to wait in line to make your bowl, and using the allergy stick makes your food take a little longer to cook and be delivered to you. If you're on a time crunch, visit during an "off" window, or take an early lunch to avoid the lines. I would give them 5 stars for variety, but Happy Cow only lets us rate non-veg* places 4 stars.
