  • Delicious South Indian food at inexpensive price

Wanting to try somewhere different for lunch today we found this unpretentious neighbourhood restaurant in a subuurb of north west London. in spite of the basic surroundings (steel chairs and metal tumblers and cutlery on the tables like a workman's canteen) we were very pleasantly surprised by the range and high quality of food offered here. For a starter we shared a mixed platter which at £5.99 was very reasonable and offered more than enough fried and steamed goodies to keep us going to the main course. For mains, we went for a Paneer Malai - creamy coconut suffused with herbs and cashew nuts and a Vegetable korma. Accompanied by tamarind rice and raita we were hard-pushed to finish the generous portions. For dessert we rejected the pre-packed frozen kulfi of many an Asian restaurant and went instead for home made Rasmalai (delicious, a bit like eating a washing up sponge soaked in vanilla cream) and Panayam, which was a kind of sago pudding served hot. Topped off with a South Indian coffee our meal for two came to £30, which we felt was very good value. The restaurant also does an outside catering trade which several customers dining there seemed very interested in.
