  • Delicious raw, vegan food which is very filling

This is my third visit to ORB Cafe since they opened around 7 or 8 months ago - if I lived in Edinburgh rather than Glasgow I'm sure I would have visited more often. I would definitely not call myself a raw foodist, but since becoming vegan almost 4 years ago I have been getting more enthusiastic about delicious salads and incorporating a lot more raw foods into my diet. Orb always has delicious and healthy nut/fruit/veg combinations on offer. One thing which also surprised me is that I find the mains incredibly filling, especially as I now take the time to eat my meals more slowly to help with digestion. The first evening I visited, I am ashamed to say that I'd brought a packet of ginger nuts with me in case I was still hungry on the journey home!! However, after my main and my sweet, fresh dessert, I was absolutely stuffed! For people who have never considered raw meals, the prices can seem expensive (Why so much for vegetables?! And they're not even hot!), however, Glasgow west end/city centre pubs get punters willing to pay £6/£7 for a burger on its own, and the labour, presentation, and quality of the fresh and organic ingredients used at Orb are not nearly as good as the food in most of those places. Also, there are no worries here about meaty smells or cross contamination. Yesterday I had a Pear & Walnut salad, then the Orange & Passionfruit cheesecake, both of which were fantastic. Service is not fast, however, I would guess due to the freshness of ingredients a lot of the sauces and other parts of dishes are made to order, and the service is great; it's lovely to be served by people who genuinely want to work there rather it just being another job in any high street pub with microwaved food and unimaginative dishes-by-numbers. For my drink I got the Green Smoothie, a mixture of green veg and sweet fruit, and that was like another meal itself, but I couldn't imagine going without having one of the desserts! It can be quite tricky to locate as it's not that obvious from the high street, so I recommend mapping it online before you go looking for it. Thank you Orb for a lovely dinner.
