  • Losing its appeal after multiple visits

The location of Le Grenier de Notre Dame can't be beat for tourists - it's a stones-throw from Notre Dame and Shakespeare and Co. - but for vegans it's really not the best place to go in town. The food isn't bad, but it's not inspired and definitely feels repetitive after multiple visits, even when ordering different meals. With three vegans in our family we've pretty much ordered every option on the menu and none of them have been outstanding. Palatable, but forgettable. My son does love their avocado-mango appetizer, but unless you're just stopping in for a quick snack it's not much of a meal. The prices are also eye-popping for how dull the food is. I got the couscous this past visit, and while it smelled heavenly the flavor was nearly non-existent. I don't know how they managed to make it smell so spicy and sweet yet have it taste like cardboard. The apple tart (the only vegan dessert), which we've had three times, seems to only get worse over time. The first time it tasted good, the second mediocre, and this last time I only had one bite because it tasted burnt and underdone simultaneously. The staff is polite, but our waiter (who has served us 2 out of 3 times) always seems a little exasperated (not rude, just not happy). I don't know if it's our speaking (we're American but always do our best in French) or his having to climb those ridiculous stairs all day, but I do wish I didn't feel like I was inconveniencing the staff by simply ordering a meal. Maybe it's just his personality? Like I said, not rude but certainly not as pleasant as servers in other Parisian veg*an restaurants we've visited.
