  • The Politics of Greed

I have been coming to the Vitking Hosue for years, primarily the location in Siem Reap before frequenting the Phnom Penh locations. To be perfectly honest, the food here is spectacular. Always has been, and most likely will retain that quality. The unfortunate reality, however, is that the owners insist on raising the prices every few months. I requested to speak to the young Khmer male, who was in his office not even five meters away. The response I got was that he was "too busy." I went in his office anyway to discuss the pricing. The first words that came out of his mouth was "profits," where if he keeps the price the same, they do not make money. No mention at all about employee salaries or keeping a high standard...just profits. This based on the cost food here in Cambodia. This is absolute rubbish considering no other restaurants besides The Vegetarian has increased their pricing, and all three restaurants are constantly crowded. You make your money off of volume, which they have. The Vitking House is coming dangerously close to matching western costs in restaurants, and it comes down to one thing and one thing only. Greed.
