- Delicious tempeh dish
Newport RI is definitively more known for clam chowders, seafood and the same- old meat dishes... So it was a great surprise last winter when Salvation Café, one of the most popular restaurant in Newport, introduced a complex fare including...tempeh. And the good news is that it is out of this world! Bursting with flavor, creative and satisfying. As good as a dish you would have in a great 100% vegan restaurant! A must try! Last winter, their tempeh dish was a root vegetable curry with coconut sauce, cashew nuts, cilantro and tamarind. Amazing! Their spring version of the dish was fried tempeh with fresh veggies, cilantro and brown rice. Still delicious, although we all slightly preferred the more sophisticated winter version of it. They really know how to cook and accommodate tempeh, so it is not bitter. They are very accommodating with vegan customers. Several salads can be made without the cheese (when will they finally discover that there are fantastic vegan cheeses available!!!). And the other 'to go' selection is their famous pad thai, that can be served with tofu. No desserts (yet) unfortunately... Portions are huge! They have a nice outdoor tiki bar in the summer.
