- Great for vegans with room for improvement
Weaver Street Market is a small co-op natural/organic grocery store in the heart of downtown Carrboro. It's a great alternative to Harris Teeter (a short walk away) if you are looking for bulk items or some specialty vegan products. Lots of local, delicious fresh produce as to be expected. It's a good place to find vegan yogurt, Field Roast sausage and cheese, etc. The frozen section has delicious readymade North Carolina-style vegan BBQ (SoyDelight brand) that I highly recommend. Their prepared foods section has containers of housemade vegan chicken salad (also available in sandwiches). Their sushi options include a spicy vegan roll, inari (sweet tofu) and the usual avocado and veggie rolls. Their salad bar is vegetarian with many whole-foods vegan options. Vegan selections in their amazing bakery include chocolate cake, apple pie and pumpkin pie (whole or by the slice), chocolate chip cookies and a couple types of muffins. They also make a to-die-for lemon rosemary bread on the weekends. Coffee bar has several non-dairy milk options. My biggest complaint is with their hot bar. There are usually a number of vegan dinner dishes (brownie points for correct labeling!) but they often look dried out or the containers are mostly empty. The ones I do get are usually delicious though. They also don't seem to experiment with offering dishes that contain vegan meat products like Beyond Meat the way whole foods does. Even more tofu dishes would be appreciated. The breakfast bar could be more vegan friendly if they offered vegan pancakes or a vegan butter spread. They have vegetarian-sausage biscuits but you can't get just the sausage since it's wrapped up in a biscuit with cheese. So definitely some ways they could make the hot bar more vegan friendly. Staff are friendly and helpful, customers are unique, and the place has a huge shady lawn out front offering a fun Carrboro vibe with lots of places to sit.
