That\u2019s what I did. Kim Stallwood is one of the sanest and most visionary leaders the animal rights movement has to offer.\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer external nofollow\">Kim Stallwood<\/a><\/strong>.<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>~ \u00a0After forty years of the modern animal advocacy movement, it\u2019s\u00a0time to move beyond the stage-one formulations of media stunts,\u00a0information dissemination, demonstrations, advertising campaigns,\u00a0and personal appeals by celebrities to stages two and three. Certainly,\u00a0we can continue to influence public opinion to be more sympathetic\u00a0to animals, but we need plans that are less whimsical, harder-headed,\u00a0more strategic, and more directed. We need to be unafraid of power.<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>As it is, animal advocates are boxed in. We\u2019re frightened of being\u00a0told by other social justice movements that animals aren\u2019t as important\u00a0as humans. We\u2019re frightened that we\u2019ll be called sentimental or\u00a0irrational or self-righteous or just plain weird. We\u2019re frightened that\u00a0others won\u2019t be as committed or absolute or uncompromised as we\u00a0are. We\u2019re frightened that, when push comes to shove, the politicians\u00a0will let us down because we\u2019re supposedly one-issue voters, and that\u00a0issue just isn\u2019t important enough.<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>Well, these are the risks that any movement has to take as it grows\u00a0up. It has to expect vilification and opposition. We have to expect\u00a0to be called \u2018radicals\u2019 and \u2018terrorists\u2019 and a whole host of even more\u00a0unpleasant names. What we do is hold on to the four key values and\u00a0not only won\u2019t we earn those labels, but the general public\u2014whom I\u00a0genuinely believe is more open to our cause than we advocates imagine\u2014will stick those labels on those who oppose us.<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\nFortunately, most of us live in societies where the free exchange of\u00a0ideas and the right to petition the government and elect one\u2019s representatives\u00a0are givens. True, moneyed interests and powerful lobbies\u00a0exist that make it hard to get through to legislators. So start small\u00a0and start locally. Pick an issue, analyse the problem, and propose a\u00a0solution. Attend your local council or ward meetings. Bring in experts,\u00a0write policy papers, give money, hold fundraisers. Organise,\u00a0campaign, join a political party, run for office yourself. Show the\u00a0politician you have a constituency; do the same with other groups in\u00a0your area.
