Later that month,\u00a0we learnt about the BBC\u2019s innovative series of community-based television\u00a0programmes called Open Door, and their decision to include\u00a0the Vegan Society among the first. The programme was shown on\u00a0January 31, 1976, and again on February 7, and is available on You-Tube. After we watched it, we knew we\u2019d made the right decision to\u00a0go vegan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2a2a2a;\">To watch the show today is to be reminded how, nearly forty years\u00a0on, many of the arguments made for veganism then remain the same\u00a0today: that more people could be fed directly through plants than\u00a0through animal protein, thus alleviating world hunger; that consuming\u00a0dairy products involves more cruelty to animals than eating\u00a0meat; that vegans lower their risk of contracting heart disease\u00a0and cancers of the colon; that the vegan diet requires vitamin B12\u00a0supplementation (although this deficiency also occurs among many\u00a0non-vegans); and that vegans are, according to one of the doctors\u00a0interviewed, \u2018normal, healthy, happy people whom you couldn\u2019t distinguish\u00a0from omnivores except that they are slimmer and perhaps\u00a0smile more\u2019 [sic].<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2a2a2a;\">In the programme we meet two families who avow that vegan food\u00a0is cheaper, no more time-consuming to prepare, and just as tasty as\u00a0an omnivorous diet. They tell the interviewer they\u2019re providing their\u00a0children with a nutritious, whole-foods-based diet and a set of ethical\u00a0beliefs that will stand them in good stead should they choose to\u00a0remain vegan later on. If anything dates the show, it\u2019s the naturopath\u00a0who makes the case for veganism as a way to reduce the need for allopathic\u00a0medicine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2a2a2a;\">As my mother and I watched the programme, we agreed that the\u00a0Society\u2019s presenters had a point or two, but we thought the vegans\u00a0on the programme were all rather, well, odd\u2014paradoxically because\u00a0they were so concerned to show themselves and their lifestyles as\u00a0normal as well as natural. No one had shaved their head, or sported\u00a0dreadlocks, or smoked or drank. No one wore bondage gear, tie-die,\u00a0Birkenstocks, glam clothing, or other \u2018alternative\u2019 fashions of the\u00a0times.\u00a0No one talked of animals\u2019 souls or presented any outlandish\u00a0spiritual beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>No one placed the suffering of the animals in the context of animal rights or the struggle for social justice (beyond complaining about how an omnivorous diet reduced the ability to feed the starving). No one advocated free love, communal living, or anarchy in the U.K. All wore clothes.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, in their complete if stilted sentences, these white and imperturbably middle-class vegans offered their lifestyle as a wholesome, completely average existence for ordinary people\u2014one profiled family were aptly named the Blands\u2014who simply happened to dislike cruelty towards animals and thought animal agriculture was inefficient and environmentally unsound. An interviewee stressed that veganism was neither puritanical nor boring, but no one made it\u00a0look particularly fun. Indeed, everyone appeared to have been told to be on their best behaviour\u2014to resist emotion, stick to the facts, and act responsibly\u2014even when extolling the benefits of their regimen. When one father observed that becoming a vegan was \u2018like shedding a very heavy, unwanted overcoat\u2019, the phrase seemed almost calculated to ensure the heart didn\u2019t race at the prospect.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Kim&#8217;s site &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kimstallwood.com\/\" title=\"Kim Stallwood is an independent scholar and author on animal rights.
