{"id":895,"date":"2009-07-13T19:29:37","date_gmt":"2009-07-14T02:29:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/?p=895"},"modified":"2009-07-13T19:30:41","modified_gmt":"2009-07-14T02:30:41","slug":"the-fat-vegan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/the-fat-vegan\/","title":{"rendered":"The Fat Vegan"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>In December 2008, the Dr. McDougall posted a newsletter to his website, entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drmcdougall.com\/misc\/2008nl\/dec\/fat.htm\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\"><strong>The<\/strong> <strong>Fat Vegan<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Frankly, I loved it.\u00a0 Not for its content, though, but for its honesty.\u00a0 Finally, someone is finally explicitly stating what the modern vegan movement has been so strongly implying:\u00a0 fat vegans are bad for business.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.peta.org\/feat\/obesity\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\">PETA<\/a> has shown a penchant in recent years for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peta.org\/content\/standalone\/veggielove\/Default.aspx\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\">sexy<\/a> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.furisdead.org\/buttons\/joannakrupa1-large.jpg\"  rel=\"external nofollow\">ad<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/origin.www.peta.org\/mc\/ads\/800-rickscabaretPETA72.jpg\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\">campaigns<\/a>, although they haven\u2019t completely foregone all the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peta.org\/content\/standalone\/StolenForFashion\/default.aspx\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\">blood<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/origin.www.peta.org\/mc\/ads\/sophie_ellis_bextor_fur_coat.jpg\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\">gore<\/a>.\u00a0 They, along with dozens of other veg organizations, have realized that the North American (wait, are we counting Mexico?) fixation on Obesity, and to a lesser extent, \u201cGoing Green\u201d, means that NOW is the perfect time to recruit new converts to our cause.\u00a0 NOW, when people are fatter, hotter, and more desperate than ever, vegan marketers have to act quickly, and show people how a vegan, or at least, <em>more<\/em> vegan, lifestyle is the solution.<\/p>\n<p>However, there is still one&#8230; bean (?) in the ointment: fat vegans.<\/p>\n<p>Because, as Dr. McDougall observes (underline provided by me for emphasis), \u201cAt extraordinary personal costs, many [vegans] labor tirelessly to protect the welfare of all animals. Fat vegans, however, have failed one important animal: themselves. Furthermore, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">their audiences of meat-eaters and animal-abusers may be so distracted by their appearance that they cannot hear the vital issues of animal rights and the environment; resulting in an unacknowledged setback for a fat vegan\u2019s hard work for change<\/span>.\u201d\u00a0 The newsletter goes on to suggest that the reason that Fat Vegans <em>are<\/em> Fat Vegans is because of vegan junk food.\u00a0 Fat Vegans are filling up on chips, cake, pop, fries, pasta, bread, and the occasional limp iceberg lettuce salad.\u00a0 If only FV\u2019s would stop trying to replace meat burgers and milkshakes with veggie burgers and soyshakes, they\u2019d probably lose weight, and we\u2019d all feel a lot better.<\/p>\n<p>To be fair, I completely agree with what I think is the intended message of this article: it\u2019s easy to be an unhealthy vegan, just like it\u2019s easy to be an unhealthy meat-eater.\u00a0 Being vegan isn\u2019t a fast track to a thin body and a clear conscience: like any person, veg or not, you have to actually think about what you\u2019re putting into your body.<\/p>\n<p>But whether he meant to or not, Dr. McD has made a more telling observation.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just about you, Fat Vegan.\u00a0 It\u2019s about all of us.\u00a0 We, the vegan movement, have a vested interest in your Fat Vegan-ness, because in all honesty, you\u2019re weighing us down (yep.\u00a0 I\u2019m that clever).\u00a0 How are we supposed to recruit new animal-lovin\u2019, earth-savin\u2019, belly hatin\u2019 people to our cause if they\u2019re looking at YOU and they start to wonder, \u201cWait.\u00a0 Being a Vegan is&#8230; complicated?\u201d\u00a0 Our entire recruitment strategy seems to on the loudest voices talking about how EASY being vegan is once you get going, and how much better you\u2019ll feel and look when you do it.\u00a0 \u00a0We\u2019ve learned that people don\u2019t <em>want<\/em> to look at videos of horrific injustices happening to animals, so they turn off the computer, close the magazine, and otherwise walk away.\u00a0 But sexy, naked, thin bodies draped in lettuce leaves, stroking great danes and suggestively biting a carrot: that turns heads.\u00a0 You, CuPcAkE-lOvIn-VeG*N99: not so much. \u00a0Our sales pitch is rapidly becoming: \u201c<em>Fat<\/em> and <em>Vegan<\/em> are not synonymous\u201d&#8230; and fat vegans are holding us back.\u00a0 Indeed, as Dr. M suggests, \u201cthe word \u201cvegan\u201d will become synonymous with terms like healthy, trim, active, young, strong, and energetic, and finally the most important adjective, earth-changing\u201d only when Fat Vegans get their act together, start dropping those pounds, and making us all look a bit more credible.<\/p>\n<p>I get it: it\u2019s hard to compete in mainstream media without a little jutting hipbone.\u00a0 However, I send out a small plea to all vegan marketing moguls: don\u2019t dismiss the Fat Vegan, and don\u2019t pretend that pre-packaged veggie burgers are the root of all fatness.\u00a0 As the loudest voices of this ever expanding movement, veg-promoting organizations have a responsibility to advocate health, green living, and animal rights in a manner that includes, not rejects, EVERY body that wants to join in a make a difference.\u00a0 Yes, Obesity has become epidemic in North America, and we <em>all<\/em> need to make some pretty big changes to our diets, our culture, our ethics, and our communities&#8230; but the growing obese population needs our compassion and support, not our judgement and ridicule, if sustainable changes are going to be made.\u00a0 Weight is a complicated issue \u2013 one that can\u2019t be reduced to stereotypes, in vegans or non-vegans alike.<\/p>\n<p>So, media planners: next time you\u2019re planning your next sexed-up veg campaign, or showcasing pictures of obese American bellies and butts with a \u201cCaution! Isn\u2019t This Horrifying?\u00a0 It could be you if you don\u2019t drop the steak!\u201d caption, think of me&#8230; The Fat Vegan.\u00a0 Think of the many dedicated vegans who work hard every day to be the best, healthiest vegan they can be, but just. aren\u2019t. thin.\u00a0 Think about how frustrating it would be to feel like you\u2019re doing something wrong, or that you\u2019re not quite vegan enough, or that you\u2019re letting the team down by not looking the part.\u00a0 Then, think about the unique position that the vegan movement has to showcase how the message of compassion that we promote forms the backbone of not only our outreach, and the way we treat animals, but of the way we treat each other.\u00a0 And finally, think about the dozens of factors that influence weight and health, beyond overeating and meat consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Not that I don\u2019t like a little bit of suggestive carrot nibbling now and then.\u00a0 I mean, who doesn\u2019t?<\/p>\n<p>Side note: In November of last year (right before <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drmcdougall.com\/misc\/2008nl\/dec\/fat.htm\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\"><strong>The Fat Vegan<\/strong><\/a> was written), <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.peta.org\/archives\/Canadian%20Airlines%20Letter%20re%20Obesity1.pdf\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\">Tracy Reiman wrote a letter to Air Canada flight company\u2019s president<\/a>, with, \u201can idea that could help ensure the health of [Air Canada] bank accounts <em>and <\/em>[Air Canada] passengers\u201d.\u00a0 The idea?
