Salt (George Bell and Sons), which seeks \u201cto set the principle of animals\u2019 rights on a consistent and intelligible footing.\u201d The title will grate, no doubt, on the ears of followers of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldcat.org\/title\/our-duty-towards-animals-a-question-considered-in-the-light-of-christian-philosophy-by-philip-austin\/oclc\/156185491\" title=\"Our duty towards animals : A question considered in the light of Christian philosophy By Philip Austin. It is true, however, that vivisection is only one branch of a wide question which includes the morality of sport, of the enslavement of domestic animals, of the slaughter of animals for food, and of \u201cmurderous millinery.\u201d Many of Mr. Salt&#8217;s pleas for humanity will win universal assent. For instance, when the Humanitarian League was coming to an end, it was arranged that, in lieu of a testimonial (which I disliked), a sum which they had in hand should be spent in printing a new edition of my \u201cAnimals\u2019 Rights,\u201d which Bell would publish, and hold for me. The prospect, you see, was a very pleasant one; I should, for once, be able to play the part of a generous author, and make free with a half-crown book. But when, after some considerable time had passed, the subject was mentioned, E.B. started, looked rather troubled, and explained that he had quite forgotten that the books did not belong to himself; in brief, he had already given them away. What could I do but beg him \u201cnot to mention it\u201d? E.B. and I had a hearty laugh over this story. The scope of Bell\u2019s work was wide; and it is to be regretted that when a memorial was proposed, no serious attempt was made to consult the general body of humanitarians, who might have suggested something worthy. This League, now known as the League Against Cruel Sports was founded in 1924 by former Humanitarian League members Mr Henry Brown Amos (1869-1946) and Mr Ernest Bell (1851-1933). For Salt, who recognised that the Humanitarian League in its day was largely a forlorn hope but with far reaching effects, there would have been satisfaction in knowing that we are now so close to \u201ctaking a stronghold of the enemy\u201d with the impending ban on hunting with dogs. ~ - Simon Wild quoting - Henry S.
