I believe that as an animal activist, you\u00a0need to keep yourself very familiar with animal rights literature. You will always feel\u00a0more comfortable talking about animal rights with people when you\u2019re well versed in the\u00a0matter. Here are the books and why I\u2019d recommend them:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Animal-Liberation-Definitive-Classic-Movement\/dp\/0061711306\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1395954722&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=animal+liberation+peter+singer\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\"><em>Animal Liberation<\/em><\/a>, by Peter Singer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Peter Singer has been called the father of the Animal Right\u2019s Movement. Depending\u00a0on who you speak with, you\u2019re bound to hear radically different opinions on him.\u00a0Regardless of your feelings from what you have heard of him, he is worth reading.\u00a0Animal Liberation was published in the mid 1970\u2019s, and it\u2019s considered by many to be\u00a0the book that ignited the animal rights movement. I had first read Animal Liberation over\u00a0a decade ago, expanding my ethical understanding of animals once I grasped his notion\u00a0of \u201cequal consideration,\u201d \u201cspeciesism\u201d and utilitarianism. Obviously my own views on\u00a0animal rights have radically changed since then with time, but I would still recommend\u00a0this book as a must read.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Free-Animals-Ingrid-E-Newkirk-ebook\/dp\/B002WJHSZW\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1395954783&amp;sr=8-2&amp;keywords=free+the+animals+ingrid\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\"><em>Free The Animals<\/em><\/a>, by Ingrid Newkirk<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This book is one of my favorite books of all time. It\u2019s easy to read because it is written\u00a0as a novel. The book focuses around one incredible heroine, who gives us her position\u00a0in the police force to free animals from places of abuse. The book was written by Ingrid\u00a0Newkirk, the president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), who I\u00a0had the privilege to meet last year and tell her that Free The Animals was one of the best\u00a0books I\u2019ve ever read. She said back to me, \u201cMake sure to spread that book around.\u201d So\u00a0there you have it!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/ingrid.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8257\" src=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/ingrid-275x300.jpg\" alt=\"Expanding Your [Vegan] Library!\" width=\"275\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/ingrid-275x300.jpg 275w, https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/ingrid.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Eat-Like-You-Care-Examination\/dp\/1492386510\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1395954889&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=eat+like+you+care+gary\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\"><em>Eat Like You Care<\/em><\/a>, Gary L. Francione<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Almost the entirety of this book is a response to the \u201cBut\u201d questions that vegans\u00a0hear from people who are not willing to give up using animals for food. Francione\u2019s\u00a0foundation for his argument is based on beliefs that we as a society already hold. He\u00a0applies the common views we take on animal abuse and applies it to the animals that we\u00a0use for good, claiming that people seem to be inconsistent on their views of animal abuse.\u00a0This is definitely a book that has helped me a lot when discussing veganism with non-\u00a0Anything, really anything! She\u2019s incredible and vegans and non-vegans have eaten\u00a0everything that I\u2019ve made of hers right away. All of her cookbooks are vegan. My\u00a0favorites include \u201cIsa does it!\u201d and \u201cVegan Cupcakes Take Over the World\u201d and \u201cVegan\u00a0with a vengeance\u201d Isa taught me how to bake as a vegan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Anything by Isa Moskowitz<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Anything, really anything! Adams<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I feel that a large reason that I had decided to go vegan overnight, largely had to do\u00a0with my understanding of feminism. Most feminists have, in the very least, heard of the\u00a0book <em>Sexual Politics<\/em> by Kate Millett. I found this book because the title reminded me\u00a0if Millett\u2019s <em>Sexual Politics<\/em> (an important book within feminist theory). Adams claims\u00a0that there is a connection between patriarchal attitudes and a diet of animal flesh\/animal\u00a0products, which will seem obvious to you once you read her argument. Adams says in\u00a0this book, \u201cWe live in a culture that has institutionalized the oppression of animals on\u00a0at least two levels: in formal structures such as slaughterhouses, meat markets, zoos,\u00a0laboratories, and circuses, and through our language. I believe that as an animal activist, you\u00a0need to keep yourself very familiar with animal rights literature. You will always feel\u00a0more comfortable talking about animal rights with people when you\u2019re well versed in the\u00a0matter. Here are the books and why I\u2019d recommend them: Animal Liberation, by Peter Singer Peter Singer has been called the father of the Animal Right\u2019s Movement. Depending\u00a0on who you speak with, you\u2019re bound to hear radically different opinions on him.\u00a0Regardless of your feelings from what you have heard of him, he is worth reading.\u00a0Animal Liberation was published in the mid 1970\u2019s, and it\u2019s considered by many to be\u00a0the book that ignited the animal rights movement. I had first read Animal Liberation over\u00a0a decade ago, expanding my ethical understanding of animals once I grasped his notion\u00a0of \u201cequal consideration,\u201d \u201cspeciesism\u201d and utilitarianism. Obviously my own views on\u00a0animal rights have radically changed since then with time, but I would still recommend\u00a0this book as a must read.
