Bell\u2019s fervency, family wealth, and publishing background made him an effective organizer. \"  target=\"_blank\">Ernest Bell Library<\/a>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.henrysalt.co.uk\/friends\/ernest-bell\/animal-world-tribute\" title=\"He was Chairman of the National Anti-Vivisection Society and a prominent member of the Humanitarian League, which he joined within a few months of its formation; was on the Council of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, and also on the Council of the National Canine Defence League. He was treasure of the Pit Ponies Protection Society, of the Cats' Protection League, and of other animal societies, and until recently the proprietor and editor of the Animals' Friend Magazine, which he founded some thirty years ago.\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\"><strong>Ernest Bell<\/strong><\/a> was directly involved in each of these groups. Some he funded. During his lifetime, the league achieved many of its early aims, with the introduction of legislation to protect horses, and the formation of a Royal Commission to examine the working conditions of pit ponies.&#8221; Some of the team members &#8211; Francis A. Cox, \u00a0Jerome K. Jerome, \u00a0Mrs K. Matthew, Ernest Bell, Alfred Brisco, \u00a0Miss Janet Graham \u2013 now running as \u2013 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.animalrefuge.co.uk\/content\/horses-and-ponies-loan-3-simple-steps\" title=\"Book an appointment to view the horses &amp; ponies Visit the equine centre and meet the animals currently looking for caring homes.\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\">Animals\u2019 Refuge<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>2) <strong>Friends of Bristol Horses Society, Home of Rest for Horses, Bristol<\/strong> \u2013 now &#8211; <strong>T<a href=\"http:\/\/www.horsetrust.org.uk\/history\/yesterday\/\" title=\"Miss Ann Lindo of North London read Black Beauty and was inspired. A working horse had no rest in those days - their owners depended on the horse to earn money to feed their families. Horses pulled taxi cabs and delivery wagons until they dropped. Ann Lindo\u2019s idea was to provide a place where sick and exhausted horses could rest and recover - lending in their place healthy animals so the owners could still earn a living.\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\">he Horse Trust<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 founded in 1886 \u2013 read about their history \u2013 actively supported in Ernest Bell\u2019s Animals&#8217; Friend magazines.<\/p>\n<p>3) <strong>Our Dumb Friends&#8217; League<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; founded in 1897 \u2013 now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluecross.org.uk\/1992\/about-blue-cross.html\" title=\"We\u2019ve been dedicated to the health and happiness of pets since 1897. Abandoned or unwanted, ill or injured \u2013 we do what\u2019s needed to give every pet a healthy life in a happy home. We\u2019re a charity, so the more help you give us, the more help we can give pets.\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\"><strong>\u2018Blue Cross\u2019<\/strong><\/a>. In 1912, the league started its &#8220;Blue Cross Fund&#8221; during the Balkan War to assist animals affected by war. This fund went towards assisting animals affected by conflict including in the first and second world wars. Actively supported in Ernest Bell\u2019s Animals&#8217; Friend magazines &amp; by the London Vegetarian Society. The Drivers&#8217; &amp; Horsekeepers&#8217; Branch \u2013 was founded circa 1906.<\/p>\n<p>4) <strong>All-Ireland Donkey Protection Society<\/strong> \u2013 no longer in existence &#8211; actively supported in Ernest Bell\u2019s Animal Friend magazines.<\/p>\n<p>5) <strong>People&#8217;s Dispensary for Sick Animals of the Poor<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0Maria Dickin, founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pdsa.org.uk\/about-us\/pdsa-history\/maria-dickin\" title=\"During the First World War, Maria Dickin CBE worked to improve the dreadful state of animal health in the Whitechapel area of London. She wanted to open a clinic where East Enders living in poverty could receive free treatment for their sick and injured animals. Despite the scepticism of the establishment, Maria Dickin opened her free 'dispensary' in a Whitechapel basement on Saturday 17th November 1917.
