{"id":4303,"date":"2013-01-16T13:08:37","date_gmt":"2013-01-16T21:08:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/?p=4303"},"modified":"2013-01-16T17:25:35","modified_gmt":"2013-01-17T01:25:35","slug":"what-is-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/what-is-health\/","title":{"rendered":"What Is Health?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2751\" alt=\"Pure Vegan\" src=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/PureVegan600x180.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/PureVegan600x180.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/PureVegan600x180-300x90.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\nWhat Is Health?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes when you hear a word too many times it can lose its true meaning or power.\u00a0 Words like LOVE or AWESOME are good examples of this but perhaps one of the most overused words is HEALTH, or to BE HEALTHY.\u00a0 We all know inherently that to have it is a desirable goal but what are we really talking about when we refer to health?\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0To a doctor it means to be free of disease or blood test numbers that \u201clook good\u201d, but when a sports agent it uses the term it means that a player can do his job despite injuries or mental angst.\u00a0 An accountant would say it has to do with cash flow and a therapist would say that it has to do with a person\u2019s ability to remain emotionally stable.\u00a0 An insurance agent knows it\u2019s attached to other words like monthly premiums, current vs. projected disease and medical procedures, age and lifestyle choices.\u00a0 A savvy marketing executive might consider the word itself more powerful than the rest because he\/she knows if people believe that a product is \u201chealthy\u201d that it implies many other outcomes like weight loss, an improvement of life in general including more happiness, attractiveness and a even a better social life.\u00a0 \u00a0Even the definition of the word health is not universally agreed upon.<\/p>\n<p>After reading through a lot of definitions on the word I think the Med lexicon Medical Dictionary\u2019s sums it up best: A state of dynamic balance in which an individual\u2019s capacity to cope with all the circumstances of living is at an optimal level; an ability to deal with physical or mental stress and a feeling of well-being.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Simply put, it\u2019s the pursuit of a flourishing condition. <\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>As a nutritionist I believe that getting your nutrition right is a huge part of obtaining a state of good health and will support all your other pursuits.\u00a0 <i>Nutrition refers to a process in (humans) involving the intake of nutrient materials and their subsequent assimilation into the tissues.\u00a0 It is the act or process of nourishing one\u2019s body.<\/i>\u00a0 Mark Twain said it this way: \u201cThe only way to keep your health is to eat what you don\u2019t want, drink what you don\u2019t like and do what you\u2019d rather not\u201d.\u00a0 Was Mr. Twain being a bit cheeky or does he have it right?\u00a0 I\u2019d like to think he\u2019s wrong, that you can learn to like (even crave) the foods that are best for your body but since I have small children I know that this is not our natural state!<\/p>\n<p>So what does our body need? On the one hand it\u2019s common sense but on the other the pursuit takes place in a somewhat hostile environment with lots of distractions along the way.\u00a0 We\u2019re coming off a time of holiday cheer combined with a lot of busyness and at the same time we\u2019re in the midst of the flu season.\u00a0 Now is the time to take inventory (don\u2019t worry, I\u2019m not going to mention the word \u201cresolution\u201d) and see what we need to tweak in our daily food and drink consumption.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4306\" alt=\"bigstock-Closeup-of-little-blonde-girl--16986404\" src=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/bigstock-Closeup-of-little-blonde-girl-16986404.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/bigstock-Closeup-of-little-blonde-girl-16986404.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/bigstock-Closeup-of-little-blonde-girl-16986404-300x167.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Water, Water and then more Water.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Dehydration is a silent yet powerful culprit in a myriad of ill-health conditions.\u00a0 The first sign of dehydration is not necessarily feeling thirsty, especially in the colder months when you might be as in tuned to the sensation.\u00a0 Other signs of mild to moderate dehydration include a headache, dry mouth, muscle weakness or general malaise.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t like the idea of drinking cold water when you\u2019re already feeling cold from the weather outside, try a few of these alternatives:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Purified room temperature water instead of ice water.<\/li>\n<li>Hot purified water with a slice of fresh lemon.<\/li>\n<li>Decaffeinated Tea<\/li>\n<li>Make it Fancy: Bubble water with a splash of citrus or with some fresh cranberries dancing around in the bubbles served in a wine glass.<\/li>\n<li>Prepare soups with extra broth.<\/li>\n<li>Caffeine and alcohol have the opposite effect on hydration.\u00a0 Take a solid break from these types of drinks for a few weeks to reset your daily habits.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4308\" alt=\"rainbow eating\" src=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/bigstock-Fitness-Woman-5178470.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" \/><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\nEat The Rainbow Twice Over<\/b><\/p>\n<p>On the one hand, eating well requires deliberate and diligent effort every hour of every day yet the formula itself is fairly simple.\u00a0 First and foremost, eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables from across the color spectrum.\u00a0 It has been my experience that if you get this right and keep it as a top priority all the other aspects of nutrition will naturally fall into place.\u00a0 Your aim should be 10-15 servings of fruits and vegetables everyday, 3-5 of which should be dark green.\u00a0 If this seems daunting, it\u2019s not as hard as you think.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a menu example:<\/p>\n<p><b>Breakfast:<\/b> Green smoothie with 2 cups of fresh spinach, one apple, 1 carrot, 1 orange, hemp seed, soy milk.<\/p>\n<p><b>Lunch<\/b>: Portobello Mushroom sandwich with sundried tomato pesto and romaine lettuce<\/p>\n<p><b>Dinner<\/b>: Roasted Vegetable Ragout (squash, cauliflower, eggplant, zucchini, marinara, greens and chickpeas)<\/p>\n<p>Take inventory of your current food habits.\u00a0 This is good to do a few times a year, especially if you\u2019ve noticed signs that something\u2019s not \u201cquite right\u201d like you\u2019re catching colds easily, feel run down or simply don\u2019t have the energy or mental focus your have enjoyed in the past.\u00a0 Sometimes it\u2019s as simple as cutting back on refined sugar and caffeine and increasing wholesome foods, so no need to over-think it.\u00a0 Never underestimate a return to the basics!<\/p>\n<p><b>Supplements Should Be Supportive<\/b><\/p>\n<p>As unfortunate as it may be, our food supply no longer supplies us with all the necessary vitamins and minerals and trace minerals our body needs for optimal health.
