Unfortunately, we live in world full of these factors and so our bodies oftentimes can experience a kind of overload of free radicals to deal with.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3984\" title=\"Variety of foods with Flavonoids\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Variety-of-foods.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Variety-of-foods.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Variety-of-foods-300x178.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Main Types of Antioxidants and Their Vegan Food Sources (*)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Alpha-Lipoic Acid<\/em><\/strong>: Spinach, Broccoli, Potatoes, Brewer\u2019s Yeast<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Coenzyme Q10<\/em><\/strong>: Peanuts and Spinach(highest sources are in meats and sardines)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Curcumin<\/em><\/strong>: Found in the spice Tumeric<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Flavonoids<\/em><\/strong>: (Also referred to polyphenols): Almonds, Apples, Broccoli, Citrus Fruits, Tea, Tomatoes, Onions, Soybeans, Red Wine, Blueberries and Bilberries<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Garlic<\/em><\/strong>: Either fresh and eaten straight away or aged garlic extract<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Ginkgo Biloba<\/em><\/strong>: An herb, usually taken in capsule form.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Green Tea<\/em><\/strong>: Traditionally taken as a beverage.\u00a0 Best source is when the tea is whole leaf.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Selenium<\/em><\/strong>: Brazil nuts, Brown Rice and Buckwheat<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Vitamin A and Carotenoids<\/em><\/strong>: Sweet Potatoes, Carrots, Spinach, Corn, Sweet Peppers, Spirulina and Kale<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Vitamin C<\/em><\/strong>: Citrus Fruits, Papaya, Brussel Sprouts, Broccoli and Strawberries<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Vitamin E<\/em><\/strong>: Nuts, Soybeans, Spinach, Sunflower Seeds, Asparagus and Sweet Potatoes<\/p>\n<p>*<em>This is not a complete list.\u00a0 Refer to the resource section for links to more information<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What is better: Food or Supplement Sources?\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Food is always going to be the best source and should always be given priority over supplements but sometimes you just simply cannot get them in the form of food, such as certain herbs and extracts.\u00a0 The other issue unique to vegans is the fact that some of the most readily available food sources might come from animals as is the case with Coenzyme Q10 and Alpha-Lipoic Acid.<\/p>\n<p>When looking to food first and foremost you must also look at the source and form, \u00a0meaning whole unadulterated foods in their most natural state possible and lots of them (in other words fruit-flavored gummy vitamins don\u2019t count!)\u00a0 Here are a few ideas for how you can get an antioxidant-rich meal or snack worked into your day:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Breakfast Bars<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1 medium ripe banana<br \/>\n1 cup old fashioned oats<br \/>\n1 cup frozen blueberries, thawed<br \/>\n1\/4 cup raisins<br \/>\n1\/8 cup pomegranate juice<br \/>\n2 tablespoons finely chopped dates<br \/>\n1 tablespoon chopped walnuts<br \/>\n1 tablespoon Goji berries<br \/>\n1 tablespoon raw sunflower seeds<br \/>\n2 tablespoons ground flax seed<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Preheat oven to 350 degrees.<\/li>\n<li>Mash banana in a large bowl. Add remaining ingredients and mix thoroughly.<\/li>\n<li>Lightly wipe an 8 X 8 baking pan with a small amount of olive oil. Spread mixture into pan.<\/li>\n<li>Bake for 25 minutes. Cool on wire rack and cut into bars. Refrigerate any leftover bars.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(<em>Compliments of www.epicurious.com<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blueberries and Greens Salad<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2 cups green leaf lettuce \u2013 chopped<br \/>\n2 cucumbers \u2013 diced<br \/>\n1 avocado \u2013 cubed<br \/>\n1 cup \u2013 fresh blueberries<br \/>\n2 cups \u2013garbanzo or other beans<br \/>\n1\/2 \u2013 1 red pepper \u2013 cut in strips<br \/>\n1\/2 \u2013 1 orange pepper \u2013 cut in strips<br \/>\n1 cup \u2013 tomatoes-diced<br \/>\n1\/2 large red onion \u2013 diced<br \/>\n1-2 cups black olives<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simple Citrus Cilantro Dressing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Juice of 1 orange<br \/>\nJuice of 2 limes<br \/>\n1\/2-3\/4 \u00a0cup olive oil<br \/>\n1\/8 cup fresh cilantro (use more for a heavier cilantro taste)<br \/>\nsea salt<br \/>\nfresh ground pepper<br \/>\n1. In a blender add all ingredients except for the olive oil. \u00a0Blend well.\u00a0 Slowly drizzle in the olive oil.<br \/>\n2. Add dressing to salad above.<\/p>\n<p>(<em>compliments of Nutritional Healing Technologies Inc<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Popeye and an Orange Creamsicle Hook-up Smoothie<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2-3 cups fresh spinach<br \/>\n1-2 fresh oranges<br \/>\n\u00bd cup soy milk<br \/>\n\u00bd cup soaked almonds<br \/>\nStevia or Agave Syrup(optional, to taste)<br \/>\nIce Cubes<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Blend everything until perfect smooth.\u00a0 Drink right away or store covered in the fridge no more than a day.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Popcorn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Already known as a good source of fiber (and perfect accompaniment to movie watching), popcorn was actually analyzed for its antioxidant levels recently by Joe Vinson, PhD and professor at the University of Scranton.\u00a0 What he found is that popcorn actually has a much higher level of the antioxidant <em>polyphenols<\/em> than many fruits when compared serving for serving (300mg vs. 160mg.).\u00a0 His research will continue to look into how much of the polyphenols in popcorn actually go to work in the body but I think it\u2019s safe to say that it\u2019s still a great snack choice when the toppings chosen with care.\u00a0 Try truffle oil drizzled on top of air popped popcorn and sprinkled with a bit of sea salt.\u00a0 Nutritional yeast also makes a great topper, giving it a slightly \u201ccheesy\u201d taste and texture.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is there anyone who should NOT consume antioxidant supplements?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There have been a few studies showing adverse reactions to antioxidant supplementation; those who are taking medication to increase their HDL cholesterol and for smokers who take excessive amounts of beta-carotene as a way, perhaps, to counteract the ill effects of their smoking habit.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re currently on any kind of prescription medication then be sure and talk with your doctor about any and all over-the-counter supplements you\u2019re taking.\u00a0 Many physicians still don\u2019t think to ask and consequently their patients assume it\u2019s not important enough to tell them.\u00a0 And for smokers, one study demonstrated that high dosage intake of beta-carotene actually made their propensity to lung cancer worse.
