I just feel so good about saving this breed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, you are saving them?\u00a0 So you don\u2019t kill them?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course we kill them\u201d, she replied, \u201cWe have to make a living.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Me: \u201cDo you kill and butcher them right there on your ranch?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her: \u201cNo, we send them to Colorado to a slaughter facility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Me: \u201cHow far away is the facility?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her: \u201cAbout 9 hours away\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Me: \u201cIs it still considered local?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her: \u201cYes, it IS local.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Me: \u201cIs it heartbreaking to send them off to slaughter when you have raised them from babies?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She got very quiet, then said softly, \u201cWell, I try not to get attached to any of them.\u00a0 Except Herman.\u00a0 We would never slaughter Herman.\u00a0 Everyone loves him.\u00a0 People even come out just to visit Herman.\u00a0 He was a 4H project years ago.\u00a0 We love him and could never kill him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Me: \u201cWhat makes Herman different from the others?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her: \u201cNothing, really, except that we have known him for so long and now he is part of the family. He is so special.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Me: \u201cSo they are all equally special, but you named him and you developed a relationship with him, so you feel differently about him, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her: \u201cI guess so, I guess they are all special in their own way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Me: \u201cJust like all of us, I suppose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She got very quiet. Then I was called into my session and said bye to her and she said, \u201cI hope we can talk after our sessions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This all got me thinking about people who think they are doing a good thing by \u201csaving a breed\u201d while killing them off.\u00a0 I put myself in the position of the cattle.\u00a0 Lets say someone wants to save my breed.\u00a0 They want to save short, fuzzy-haired, Russians because our breed is becoming very rare.\u00a0 To do this, they propose to me that they keep me pregnant by artificial insemination and I produce lots of babies. My daughters and granddaughters and I will keep producing more babies.\u00a0 Then they will kill off my family and me while we are still in our prime.\u00a0 But, they will make sure there are always enough of us that the short fuzzy-haired Russians don\u2019t go extinct.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_9830_2.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3436\" src=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_9830_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"685\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_9830_2.jpg 979w, https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_9830_2-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_9830_2-768x491.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 685px) 100vw, 685px\" \/><\/a><em>Fuzzy headed woman dreaming of her breed being saved?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I am opened-minded, so I listen to their whole proposal before I respond, \u201cNo thanks guys.\u00a0 I really don\u2019t give a hoot about whether my breed lives.\u00a0 I never even think about us being a breed, we are individuals who want to live long full lives surrounded by our family and friends with plenty of fresh-air, sunshine and food to eat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I imagine that if we spoke bovine, the cattle she thinks she is saving would respond in much the same way.\u00a0 They want freedom, food, family and friends.\u00a0 They want to live out their lives with as little suffering as possible.\u00a0 I don\u2019t speak bovine, but I can pretty much guarantee that they cattle do not wake in the morning thinking about their breed.\u00a0 They are thinking about their own comfort and desires.\u00a0 I watched 6 cows at a sanctuary stand up in unison and walk to the only sunny spot on a hill.\u00a0 The sun was pouring down in a beam from an opening in the cloud-covered sky.\u00a0 The six cows made their way up the hill and settled into the sunny patch with their eyes closed and their faces soaking up the warm sun.\u00a0 They were not thinking, \u201cHere we are, a bunch of cows.\u201d\u00a0 They were probably not thinking about anything except the delicious warmth on their faces.<\/p>\n<p>It is time to look at the reality of our food systems for the individuals who are impacted by our choices.\u00a0 When we combine the compassion of caring for all live with buying as much local organic as possible, we are moving in a direction that truly supports life on earth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was in the waiting room at the local massage school here in Santa Fe about to have a bodywork session with one of the students.\u00a0 A woman in the seat next to me started talking to me about her work.\u00a0 She and her husband raise beef cattle.\u00a0 She was very proud of what she was doing and excitedly went into it without knowing who she was talking to, \u201cWe are saving a very old heritage breed of cattle.\u00a0 Without us, they would probably die off.\u00a0 AND, it is LOCAL!\u00a0 It isn\u2019t easy to keep going with local products. \u00a0You know, they are much more expensive to produce and most people don\u2019t want to pay the price.
