Vegetarian themed poem\u00a0written by the pseudonymous author, ‘Jerry’ & published in the West Australian Times <\/em>on 26 October 1874.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Banquet of Blood: a vegetarian lay<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

A cockroach crawled o’er a baker’s shelf,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Waving his horns, and looking for pelf:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The baker upon his bread board below,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Was kneading and rolling about the dough.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The board received such terrible thumps,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As the baker’s rolling pin struck the lumps,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The shelf was shaken, the cockroach fell –<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ah where? The baker he could not tell!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Into the oven, deep in the dough,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Stern fate would have the cockroach go,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Dead and buried, his fate unknown<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Perished the cockroach all alone.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A napkin lay where a feast was spread,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In its midst a bit of dainty bread.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A lovely lady, with hands most fair,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Unravell’d the napkin lying there.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Soups, fish, and birds, of many a kind,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A pig with skewers, its joints to bind:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A rabbit with parsley stuck on its nose,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And snipes and wallabies all laid in rows.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Huge limbs of pork, beef, mutton, and veal,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Were sliced by the flourish of sharp edged steel:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The well-charged plates were borne round<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

By valets in coats with gilt lace bound<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Many a beggar might live on the steams,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

That danced in the hall on the waxlight beams,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But he must have a most delicate smell,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Who by its strange odour the dish could tell.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A terrible shriek stirs the steam and air,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

That circle around the lady fair:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The guests all about the table rise,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Gaze towards her with dread surprise.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

‘Pray sit, my lords,’ at length quoth she,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

‘And kindly I pray, don’t question me’<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And glad were they, when the fright was o’er,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To turn to the sumptuous feast once more.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In vain did the lady try to eat<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Delicate morsels of richest meat;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A dreadful sight met her constant view –<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

She had bitten the cockroach through!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Then to her, in the steam, from a bright tureen,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Was the ghost of the luckless cockroach seen;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

While confusion in her ears did ring’<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The sprite of the cockroach did seem to sing:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

‘Lady! Why gave you that terrible shriek!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Why rolled your eyes, and paled your cheek?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Why dread to bite a poor worm like me,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But eat sheep and swine most greedily?’<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

‘Oh, delicate lady, oh! sensitive fair,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

See the table strewn with carcasses there,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Mangled and torn, all flesh from bone;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Oh, leave such horrible feasts alone!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

‘The waving corn, and the fruitful tree,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Bear gracious nourishment for thee;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Live, fair one, as a lady should,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And being beautiful, be good!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

‘Though lions, tigers, vultures prey.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Be thou more merciful than they;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
