The baker he could not tell!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">Into the oven, deep in the dough,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">Stern fate would have the cockroach go,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">Dead and buried, his fate unknown<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">Perished the cockroach all alone.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">A napkin lay where a feast was spread,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">In its midst a bit of dainty bread.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">A lovely lady, with hands most fair,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">Unravell&#8217;d the napkin lying there.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">Soups, fish, and birds, of many a kind,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">A pig with skewers, its joints to bind:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">A rabbit with parsley stuck on its nose,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">And snipes and wallabies all laid in rows.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">Huge limbs of pork, beef, mutton, and veal,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">Were sliced by the flourish of sharp edged steel:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">The well-charged plates were borne round<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">By valets in coats with gilt lace bound<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">Many a beggar might live on the steams,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">That danced in the hall on the waxlight beams,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">But he must have a most delicate smell,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">Who by its strange odour the dish could tell.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">A terrible shriek stirs the steam and air,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">That circle around the lady fair:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">The guests all about the table rise,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">Gaze towards her with dread surprise.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">&#8216;Pray sit, my lords,&#8217; at length quoth she,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">&#8216;And kindly I pray, don&#8217;t question me&#8217;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">And glad were they, when the fright was o&#8217;er,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">To turn to the sumptuous feast once more.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">In vain did the lady try to eat<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">Delicate morsels of richest meat;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">A dreadful sight met her constant view &#8211;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">She had bitten the cockroach through!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">Then to her, in the steam, from a bright tureen,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">Was the ghost of the luckless cockroach seen;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">While confusion in her ears did ring&#8217;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">The sprite of the cockroach did seem to sing:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"EN-GB;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"small;\">&#8216;Lady!
