and another added, as the crowning absurdity, &#8220;And cats!&#8221; that no adequate Society has ever taken root to befriend these household gods who often fall from high estate, and their brothers the strays. A society has been suggested several times, but when one reads of the many cat shows and breeders, the many devotees of Puss, one wonders why this interest in, and possibly love of, the feline tribe, does not lead any section of the public to come to grips with the appalling state of misery and muddle which besets the problem.<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-4'><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/and-cats\/#Should_cats_be_taxed_Can_they_be_taxed_Does_chloroform_provide_the_most_humane_death_or_is_electricity_better_Are_the_shelters_properly_run_and_many_other_points_are_often_argued_but_never_settled_Dogs_and_horses_are_better_provided_for\" class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-19\"  >Should cats be taxed? Can they be taxed? Does chloroform provide the most humane death, or is electricity better? Are the shelters properly run? and many other points, are often argued, but never settled. Dogs and horses are better provided for.<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-4'><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/and-cats\/#At_the_present_moment_we_read_that_the_College_of_Pestology_of_all_places_is_urging_the_registration_of_cats_and_a_Bill_to_make_it_law_and_thinks_the_animals_themselves_will_greatly_benefit_thereby_%E2%80%93_in_other_words_a_tax_There_are_many_objections_to_the_suggestion_and_we_doubt_if_it_could_be_worked\" class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-20\"  >At the present moment we read that the College of Pestology, of all places, is urging the registration of cats, and a Bill to make it law, and thinks the animals themselves will greatly benefit thereby &#8211; in other words, a tax. There are many objections to the suggestion, and we doubt if it, could be worked.<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-4'><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/and-cats\/#Two_recent_cases_in_court_have_also_helped_to_bring_home_to_many_people_the_feeling_that_something_should_be_done\" class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-21\"  >Two recent cases in court have also helped to bring home to many people the feeling that something should be done.<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-4'><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/and-cats\/#One_was_the_mismanagement_of_a_lethal_box_at_a_cat_shelter_when_the_victim_%E2%80%9Cappearing_to_be_dead%E2%80%9D_afterwards_crawled_back_to_his_home_and_was_discovered_by_the_owner_a_week_later_when_it_then_died_after_how_great_suffering_who_can_tell\" class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-22\"  >One was the mismanagement of a lethal box at a cat shelter, when the victim, &#8220;appearing to be dead,&#8221; afterwards crawled back to his home, and was discovered by the owner a week later, when it then died after how great suffering, who can tell?<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-4'><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/and-cats\/#The_other_was_a_case_of_the_%E2%80%9Cold_fashioned_method%E2%80%9D_of_drowning_kittens_which_was_very_rightly_condemned_by_the_magistrate_The_defendant_did_not_even_keep_the_kittens_underneath_the_water_Their_cries_were_heard_and_a_prosecution_by_the_RSPCA_was_the_result\" class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-23\"  >The other was a case of the &#8220;old fashioned method&#8221; of drowning kittens, which was very rightly condemned by the magistrate. The defendant did not even keep the kittens underneath the water. Their cries were heard, and a prosecution by the R.S.P.C.A. was the result.<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-4'><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/and-cats\/#This_cause_is_just_typical_of_many_others_The_majority_of_people_do_not_know_what_to_do_with_unwanted_animals_and_there_is_no_signpost_available\" class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-24\"  >This cause is just typical of many others. The majority of people do not know what to do with unwanted animals, and there is no signpost available.<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-4'><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/and-cats\/#Education_instruction_persuasion_district_visitors_and_district_lectures_%E2%80%93_all_these_might_be_tried_because_knowledge_and_the_inculcation_of_sympathy_would_help_to_stem_the_swarms_of_miserable_cats_that_the_shelters_with_all_praiseworthy_zeal_do_their_utmost_to_collect_from_the_streets\" class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-25\"  >Education, instruction, persuasion, district visitors and district lectures &#8211; all these might be tried, because knowledge and the inculcation of sympathy would help to stem, the swarms of miserable cats that the shelters, with all praiseworthy zeal, do their utmost to collect from the streets.<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-4'><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/and-cats\/#We_want_to_see_a_special_society_for_the_Prevention_of_Cruelty_to_Cats_inaugurated_determined_to_find_a_way_to_improve_their_condition_without_bringing_hardships_or_restrictions_upon_the_poor_whose_only_friend_may_be_a_%E2%80%9Cfurry%E2%80%9D_brother\" class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-26\"  >We want to see a special society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Cats inaugurated, determined to find a way to improve their condition, without bringing hardships or restrictions upon the poor, whose only friend may be a &#8220;furry&#8221; brother.<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-4'><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/and-cats\/#Specialisation_is_the_order_of_the_day_and_so_it_must_have_its_place_in_this_matter_We_cannot_get_away_from_the_fact_that_some_folk_like_dogs_best_and_others_cats_some_detest_the_sight_of_them_but_even_these_are_not_heartless_%E2%80%93_they_will_see_that_justice_at_least_is_done_to_the_harmless_necessary_cat\" class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-27\"  >Specialisation is the order of the day, and so it must have its place in this matter. We cannot get away from the fact that some folk like dogs best and others cats; some detest the sight of them, but even these are not heartless &#8211; they will see that justice at least is done to the harmless necessary cat.<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-4'><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/and-cats\/#At_the_ANIMALS_FRIEND_office_we_feel_ashamed_at_our_inability_to_tell_enquirers_where_they_can_safely_board_their_cats_when_leaving_home_%E2%80%93_so_few_are_the_caterers_for_this_one_urgent_need\" class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-28\"  >At the ANIMALS&#8217; FRIEND office we feel ashamed at our inability to tell enquirers where they can safely board their cats when leaving home &#8211; so few are the caterers for this one urgent need.<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-4'><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/and-cats\/#My_new_society_to_be_must_make_this_want_supplied_%E2%80%93_a_temporary_home_without_danger_of_infection_or_escape\" class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-29\"  >My new society, to be, must make this want supplied &#8211; a temporary home without danger of infection or escape.<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-4'><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/and-cats\/#Who_then_will_think_out_a_happy_idea_And_who_agreeing_with_this_little_appeal_will_send_in_their_names_as_soon_as_possible_to_the_AF_Secretary_Notices_of_a_meeting-place_will_then_be_issued_and_an_opportunity_for_some_practical_proposals_which_will_we_hope_start_the_ball_rolling_And_remember_above_all_that_shelters_are_palliatives_%E2%80%93_useful_indeed_%E2%80%93_but_they_are_not_cures_for_what_is_wrong_with_our_cats\" class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-30\"  >Who, then, will think out a happy idea? And who, agreeing with this little appeal, will send in their names as soon as possible to the A.F. Secretary. Notices of a meeting-place will then be issued, and an opportunity for some practical proposals, which will, we hope, start the ball rolling. and another added, as the crowning absurdity, &#8220;And cats!&#8221; that no adequate Society has ever taken root to befriend these household gods who often fall from high estate, and their brothers the strays. A society has been suggested several times, but when one reads of the many cat shows and breeders, the many devotees of Puss, one wonders why this interest in, and possibly love of, the feline tribe, does not lead any section of the public to come to grips with the appalling state of misery and muddle which besets the problem.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Should_cats_be_taxed_Can_they_be_taxed_Does_chloroform_provide_the_most_humane_death_or_is_electricity_better_Are_the_shelters_properly_run_and_many_other_points_are_often_argued_but_never_settled_Dogs_and_horses_are_better_provided_for\"><\/span>Should cats be taxed? Can they be taxed? Does chloroform provide the most humane death, or is electricity better? Are the shelters properly run? and many other points, are often argued, but never settled. Dogs and horses are better provided for.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"At_the_present_moment_we_read_that_the_College_of_Pestology_of_all_places_is_urging_the_registration_of_cats_and_a_Bill_to_make_it_law_and_thinks_the_animals_themselves_will_greatly_benefit_thereby_%E2%80%93_in_other_words_a_tax_There_are_many_objections_to_the_suggestion_and_we_doubt_if_it_could_be_worked\"><\/span>At the present moment we read that the College of Pestology, of all places, is urging the registration of cats, and a Bill to make it law, and thinks the animals themselves will greatly benefit thereby &#8211; in other words, a tax. There are many objections to the suggestion, and we doubt if it, could be worked.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Two_recent_cases_in_court_have_also_helped_to_bring_home_to_many_people_the_feeling_that_something_should_be_done\"><\/span>Two recent cases in court have also helped to bring home to many people the feeling that something should be done.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"One_was_the_mismanagement_of_a_lethal_box_at_a_cat_shelter_when_the_victim_%E2%80%9Cappearing_to_be_dead%E2%80%9D_afterwards_crawled_back_to_his_home_and_was_discovered_by_the_owner_a_week_later_when_it_then_died_after_how_great_suffering_who_can_tell\"><\/span>One was the mismanagement of a lethal box at a cat shelter, when the victim, &#8220;appearing to be dead,&#8221; afterwards crawled back to his home, and was discovered by the owner a week later, when it then died after how great suffering, who can tell?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_other_was_a_case_of_the_%E2%80%9Cold_fashioned_method%E2%80%9D_of_drowning_kittens_which_was_very_rightly_condemned_by_the_magistrate_The_defendant_did_not_even_keep_the_kittens_underneath_the_water_Their_cries_were_heard_and_a_prosecution_by_the_RSPCA_was_the_result\"><\/span>The other was a case of the &#8220;old fashioned method&#8221; of drowning kittens, which was very rightly condemned by the magistrate. The defendant did not even keep the kittens underneath the water. Their cries were heard, and a prosecution by the R.S.P.C.A. was the result.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"This_cause_is_just_typical_of_many_others_The_majority_of_people_do_not_know_what_to_do_with_unwanted_animals_and_there_is_no_signpost_available\"><\/span>This cause is just typical of many others.
