Believe it or not, but Mallorca is the top destination for vegans in Europe. I know I’m using\u00a0superlatives here, but I do believe it’s true.<\/p>\n

Not only are more and more high-class restaurants (such as the “Hotel Valldemossa” or the\u00a0two-star Michelin restaurant “Es Fum”) starting to offer extensive vegan menus, but the\u00a0local government is also recognizing the rising number of vegans on the largest Balearic island.\u00a0How do I know? Well, let’s take the traditional Sant Sebasti\u00e1 festivities in Palma for\u00a0example. It’s usually a meat-only outdoor festivity. Hundreds of people celebrate the end of\u00a0Christmas time culminating on the 6th of January and combine it with Palma de Mallorca\u00a0Patron Saint’s Feast Day with street barbecues accompanied with masses of meat. But this\u00a0year, for the first time in its history, there were eleven (11) vegan barbecues alongside\u00a0the other bonfires.<\/p>\n

A truly historical moment, and the result of years of fighting for it on behalf of the vegan\u00a0community. Why did things change? Well\u2026from what I hear, there is now a vegan amongst\u00a0the rows of decision-makers in the administration of Palma.<\/p>\n

Mallorca attracts a certain kind of people<\/strong><\/p>\n

Regardless of Mallorca’s reputation of being a mass-tourism destination, more and more\u00a0open-minded people come to visit or even move to this beautiful island in the\u00a0Mediterranean Sea. Broad-minded people have a few things in common: they are more\u00a0aware of their environment, their bodies and their nutrition. Lots of them are Yogis and\u00a0vegans! Even though nobody knows the exact number, it is evident that a growing number\u00a0of residents choose to live an animal\/cruelty-free life.<\/p>\n

Of course these people need to make money with something \u2013 so they open vegan\u00a0restaurants, vegan supermarkets and even vegan hotels.<\/p>\n

Lo Vegano<\/p><\/div>\n

More vegans live on Mallorca<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not too far away from Mallorca’s first all-vegan supermarket \u201cLo Vegano<\/a>\u201d there is a vegan\u00a0ice-cream parlor in Palma. The \u201cIce Cream Crew<\/a>\u201d started selling vegan ice cream in\u00a0December of 2015 and the owners are amazed at how fast the customer base is growing.<\/p>\n

Vegan hotels like the Villa Vegana<\/a> in Esporles and Culinary Schools such as Sabor Vegan\u00a0Culinary Academy Mallorca in Palma are providing delicious options for vegans from all\u00a0over the world. Veganism is a big new wave that many people are riding on Mallorca. The\u00a0movement is unstoppable. Apparently the current growth rate is 94% – says Manuel Lynch,\u00a0Founder of ‘Mallorca Vegan SL.” His goal is to make \u201cMallorca the world\u2019s leading Vegan\u00a0Vacation Destination\u201d and it’s working!<\/p>\n

At the moment\u00a0most choices for vegan food are found in Palma, but you won’t\u00a0believe how many options you can have while traveling around the island.<\/p>\n

Right now there are 70(!) vegan and\/or vegetarian places listed on HappyCow<\/a> alone and\u00a0more are to be found. But best of all: the number is constantly growing. From east to west\u00a0and north to south you’ll find options for animal\/cruelty-free food and often even organic\u00a0food.<\/p>\n

Of course some areas have a higher density of vegan options like in the northeast and in\u00a0Palma, but every month a new place opens and gives vegan holiday makers, locals and\u00a0residents more variety to choose from. It’s not going to take much longer until we will be\u00a0on top of all the \u201cbest places for vegans\u201d \u2013 mark my words! Until then: come and check it\u00a0out yourself!<\/p>\n
