Education is not only a failure; it is a dead-weight\u00a0of falsehood and class tyranny which hampers progress. Let us go\u00a0straight for socialism and equal human rights and opportunities. Your\u00a0education is only used to perpetuate industrial slavery and to keep the\u00a0children of the working classes ignorant of the blood-sucking system\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">into whose meshes they will be thrown unless we combine and make our\u00a0influence felt now.&#8221;<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CYou_are_neglecting_the_most_obvious_duties_which_should_come_first%E2%80%9D_says_the_quiet_and_motherly_voice_of_the_third_reformer_%E2%80%9Cinfants_die_by_the_hundred_thousand_owing_to_neglect_There_will_soon_be_no_babies_for_you_to_instruct_either_in_materialism_or_socialism_The_race_will_die_out_whilst_you_talk_Look_at_the_slums_and_the_careless_ignorant_mothers_we_want_infant-welfare_work_we_want_a_new_baby_cult_we_want_to_teach_people_parental_responsibility%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">&#8220;You are neglecting the most obvious duties which should come first,&#8221;\u00a0says the quiet and motherly voice of the third reformer; &#8220;infants die by\u00a0the hundred thousand owing to neglect. There will soon be no babies for\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">you to instruct either in materialism or socialism. The race will die\u00a0out whilst you talk. Look at the slums and the careless, ignorant\u00a0mothers; we want infant-welfare work, we want a new baby cult, we want\u00a0to teach people parental responsibility.&#8221;<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CNonsense%E2%80%9D_breaks_in_the_virile_voice_of_the_fourth_reformer_%E2%80%9Cwhat_you_want_is_to_take_people_away_from_the_slums_to_bring_them_back_to_the_country_Land_nationalization_is_what_we_need%E2%80%93a_free_healthy_life_far_removed_from_the_factories_that_kill_soul_and_body_by_the_grinding_monotony_of_existence_Man_was_made_for_life_on_the_soil_for_contact_with_sun_and_wind_flowers_and_trees_They_will_give_health_and_life_to_your_babies%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>&#8220;Nonsense,&#8221; breaks in the virile voice of the fourth reformer; &#8220;what you\u00a0want is to take people away from the slums, to bring them back to the\u00a0country. Land nationalization is what we need&#8211;a free, healthy life, far\u00a0removed from the factories that kill soul and body by the grinding\u00a0monotony of existence. Man was made for life on the soil, for contact\u00a0with sun and wind, flowers and trees. They will give health and life to\u00a0your babies.&#8221;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CYour_schemes_have_only_a_secondary_importance%E2%80%9D%E2%80%93the_voice_of_a_prominent_suffragist_is_now_heard_%E2%80%9CGive_women_the_vote_and_these_reforms_will_follow_Men_have_made_all_these_abominable_laws_and_customs_women_will_bring_in_just_and_human_laws_and_change_all_social_life_As_for_the_suggestion_that_country_life_will_improve_the_standard_of_living_I_can_only_say_that_it_is_made_in_ignorance_of_the_real_conditions_Look_at_the_farm_labourers_wife_and_her_home-life_She_is_often_the_most_miserable_worn-out_creature_who_tries_in_vain_to_keep_the_children_and_herself_properly_fed_and_clothed_Her_life_is_a_long_travesty_of_the_laws_of_health%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #808000;\">&#8220;Your schemes have only a secondary importance&#8221;&#8211;the voice of a\u00a0prominent suffragist is now heard. &#8220;Give women the vote and these\u00a0reforms will follow. Men have made all these abominable laws and\u00a0customs; women will bring in just and human laws and change all social\u00a0life. As for the suggestion that country life will improve the standard\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #808000;\">of living, I can only say that it is made in ignorance of the real\u00a0conditions. Look at the farm labourer&#8217;s wife and her home-life. She is\u00a0often the most miserable, worn-out creature, who tries in vain to keep\u00a0the children and herself properly fed and clothed. Her life is a long\u00a0travesty of the laws of health.&#8221;<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CNaturally%E2%80%9D_comments_the_temperance_reformer_%E2%80%9Cwhilst_you_allow_the_labourer_to_soak_himself_in_drink_and_to_spend_his_money_at_the_public-house_Drink_is_the_root_of_all_our_social_troubles_it_ruins_the_body_and_corrupts_the_mind_it_poisons_the_unborn_children_fills_our_prisons_and_asylums_You_may_legislate_and_equalize_opportunities_as_much_as_you_please_so_long_as_you_allow_the_cursed_liberty_of_drink_there_can_be_no_health_and_no_human_decency_Prohibition_is_the_most_urgent_of_all_our_needs%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\">&#8220;Naturally,&#8221; comments the temperance reformer, &#8220;whilst you allow the\u00a0labourer to soak himself in drink and to spend his money at the\u00a0public-house. Drink is the root of all our social troubles: it ruins the\u00a0body and corrupts the mind, it poisons the unborn children, fills our\u00a0prisons and asylums. You may legislate and equalize opportunities as\u00a0much as you please; so long as you allow the cursed liberty of drink\u00a0there can be no health and no human decency. Prohibition is the most\u00a0urgent of all our needs.&#8221;<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"An_athletic-looking_young_man_rosy-cheeked_and_clear-eyed_who_had_been_listening_with_a_somewhat_supercilious_smile_now_joins_in_the_debate_%E2%80%9CThere_would_be_no_need_for_you_to_bother_about_drink_if_you_could_persuade_people_to_give_up_flesh-eating_Vegetarianism_is_the_cure_of_all_ills_It_drives_away_disease_and_the_craving_for_stimulants_it_gives_you_pure_blood_and_a_desire_for_the_really_simple_life_I_live_in_a_tent_on_ninepence_a_day_and_sleep_in_the_open_I_grow_my_own_fruit_and_vegetables_and_do_my_own_cooking_Thoreau_is_my_master_and_Carpenter_my_friend_I_hate_smoky_cities_with_their_slums_and_their_shambles_and_your_whole_sickly_civilization%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;\">An athletic-looking young man, rosy-cheeked and clear-eyed, who had been listening with a somewhat supercilious smile, now joins in the debate. &#8220;There would be no need for you to bother about drink if you could\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;\">persuade people to give up flesh-eating. Vegetarianism is the cure of\u00a0all ills. It drives away disease and the craving for stimulants, it\u00a0gives you pure blood and a desire for the really simple life. I live in\u00a0a tent on ninepence a day and sleep in the open. I grow my own fruit and\u00a0vegetables and do my own cooking. Thoreau is my master and Carpenter my\u00a0friend. I hate smoky cities with their slums and their shambles and your\u00a0whole sickly civilization.&#8221;<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CSickly%E2%80%9D_repeats_a_Christian_Scientist_with_reproachful_emphasis_on_the_word_The_speaker_is_a_woman_of_sixty_whose_face_bears_the_stamp_of_successful_self-discipline_and_a_sound_physique_%E2%80%9CI_have_seen_vegetarians_who_looked_extremely_sickly_Before_I_became_a_Christian_Scientist_I_too_sought_health_by_various_systems_of_diet_Now_I_know_that_all_disease_is_but_an_error_of_mortal_mind_and_in_Science_and_Health_by_Mrs_Eddy_we_are_told%E2%80%94-%E2%80%9C\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\">&#8220;Sickly!&#8221; repeats a Christian Scientist, with reproachful emphasis on\u00a0the word. The speaker is a woman of sixty, whose face bears the stamp of\u00a0successful self-discipline and a sound physique. &#8220;I have seen\u00a0vegetarians who looked extremely sickly. Before I became a Christian\u00a0Scientist I, too, sought health by various systems of diet. Now I know\u00a0that all disease is but an error of mortal mind, and in <em>Science and\u00a0Health<\/em>, by Mrs. Eddy, we are told&#8212;-&#8220;<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"She_was_not_allowed_to_finish_her_sentence_for_a_Congregational_minister_famous_for_his_pulpit_denunciations_of_sin_has_risen_and_gravely_waves_his_hand_to_ensure_a_respectful_hearing_%E2%80%9CAll_you_people%E2%80%9D_he_says_in_a_voice_vibrating_with_solemn_indignation_%E2%80%9Care_pursuing_fleeting_shadows_The_kingdom_of_God_is_within_This_false_cult_of_health_by_self-hypnotism_or_health_by_living_like_the_beasts_in_the_field_gives_undue_weight_to_things_which_after_all_relate_to_the_body_It_is_the_soul_of_man_that_is_important_not_where_he_lives_or_what_he_eats_We_need_the_fear_of_God_and_the_thirst_for_His_mercy_we_need_the_Divine_guidance_which_will_transform_and_sanctify_our_social_relations%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #800080;\">She was not allowed to finish her sentence, for a Congregational\u00a0minister, famous for his pulpit denunciations of sin, has risen and\u00a0gravely waves his hand to ensure a respectful hearing. &#8220;All you people,&#8221;\u00a0he says, in a voice vibrating with solemn indignation, &#8220;are pursuing\u00a0fleeting shadows. The kingdom of God is within. The section of the book which I have duplicated below, made me think about the various-quality of exchanges which happen\u00a0in Facebook Groups, almost 99 years later, between various types of reformers&#8230;&#8230; reform 1. To improve by alteration, correction of error, or removal of defects; put into a better form or condition. 2. a. To abolish abuse or malpractice in. b. To put an end to (an abuse or wrong). 3. To induce or persuade (a person) to give up harmful or immoral practices; cause to adopt a better way of life.
