Though many held similar views at the time, these six pioneers were the first to actively found a new movement - despite opposition. The group felt a new word was required to describe them; something more concise than \u2018non-dairy vegetarians\u2019. Rejected words included \u2018dairyban\u2019, \u2018vitan\u2019, and \u2018benevore\u2019. They settled on \u2018vegan\u2019, containing the first three and last two letters of \u2018vegetarian\u2019. In the words of Donald Watson, it marked \u201cthe beginning and end of vegetarian.\u201d\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\">The Vegan Society<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is now 70 years old!<\/h2>\n<p>Today, we want to remember <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mclveganway.org.uk\/kathleen_jannaway.html\" title=\"Kathleen Jannaway was born on 6th February 1915, in Tooting, London. Kathleen was the daughter of William Jannaway and Eileen Mew, who had married in 1913.\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\">Kathleen &amp; Jack Jannaway<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>&amp; jump back 35 years to 1979.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kathleen ran the The Vegan Society effectively for many years with Jack.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/AVRuthHarrisonAnimalMachines-192x300.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11150 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/AVRuthHarrisonAnimalMachines-192x300.jpg\" alt=\"AVRuthHarrisonAnimalMachines-192x300\" width=\"192\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The catalyst which had turned Kathleen &amp; Jack vegan, was a two page review of Ruth Harrison&#8217;s book &#8216;Animal Machines&#8217; in &#8216;The Observer&#8217; (in 1964). It revealed how veal calves were separated from their mothers, solitarily confined in two foot wide crates where they were unable to lie down comfortably, and denied solid food.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CAt_this_point_I_realised_that_these_calves_were_the_surplus_of_the_dairy_industry_and_that_the_milk_which_nature_intended_for_them_was_being_fed_to_us_I_decided_to_give_up_milk_and_live_without_any_animal_products_there_and_then%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%93_Kathleen_Jannaway\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #800080;\">&#8220;At this point I realised that these calves were the surplus of the dairy industry and that the milk which nature intended for them was being fed to us. I decided to give up milk and live without any animal products there and then.&#8221;<\/span> &#8211; Kathleen Jannaway<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"In_1979_The_Vegan_Society_was_702_35_years_old\"><\/span>In 1979 The Vegan Society was 70\/2 = 35 years old!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The HQ was Kathleen&#8217;s &amp; Jack&#8217;s own house in the south of England.<\/p>\n<p>Below we reproduce\u00a0an original <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mimeograph\" title=\"Mimeographs, along with spirit duplicators and hectographs, were a common technology in printing small quantities, as in office work, classroom materials, and church bulletins. Early fanzines were printed with this technology, because it was widespread and cheap.\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\">mimeographed<\/a> letter which Kathleen had written in 1977 &#8211; but was still sending out 2 years later.<\/p>\n<p>This copy was sent to friends of ours in 1979 &#8211; we keep it in our<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/our-etymological-past\/\" title=\" \u201cI have little doubt that the proposal for the establishment of an Ernest Bell Library, which would specialize in humanitarian and progressive literature, and so form a sort of centre for students, will meet with a wide response.\u201d Henry S. Salt \u2013 writing in September 1934\"  target=\"_blank\">Ernest Bell Library<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; we have transcribed it for easier reading.<\/p>\n<p>Kathleen enclosed 8+ leaflets &amp; booklets &amp; the book list for April of 1979\u00a0with this letter &#8211; we also still have all of those &amp; will share them another day!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some time after 1964 Kathleen &amp; Jack &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800080;\">&#8230;&#8230;.joined the Vegan Society &#8211; Kathleen was later, in 1972, to become General Secretary. During this time virtually all the Society&#8217;s literature &#8211; leaflets and booklets &#8211; were written and typed by Kathleen and illustrated and copied by Jack. Working together they made an indefatigable team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Their Leatherhead house and garden became a venue, attended by many over the years, for meetings and garden parties to raise funds for the many concerns they were involved in. Many will remember Kathleen and Jack\u2019s garden as the place where they came together each year with vegans from up and down the country. These meetings provided a wonderful opportunity for fellowship with kindred spirits &#8211; especially important for people who were isolated and knew no other vegans living near to them &#8211; and for vegan children to be together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/1970s-vegans-growl\/\" title=\"\u201cIn the middle of December, the BBC invites the Society to contribute an Open Door programme to be broadcast on 31 January (repeated 7 February). Kathleen Jannaway and Jack Sanderson spend much of January working with the BBC\u2019s Community Programme Unit. The programme, A Better Future for All Life, is presented by Erica Cook, a vegan from New Zealand, and includes interviews with Jack Sanderson, Dr Frey Ellis, Tom Sanders, Serena Coles, Eva Batt, the Bray and Bland families, Harry Bonnie and Kathleen Jannaway.\u201d\"  target=\"_blank\">The Vegan Society&#8217;s BBC Open Door programme <\/a>showed Kathleen in her garden with her compost heaps. She and Jack worked hard to make their garden into a plot that provided living proof that more people could be sustained on less land in a more self-sufficient way on a vegan diet. Mark Gold recounts that in 1996, when Kathleen was eighty-one, she was still harvesting bumper crops of which any gardener would be proud, all grown from her own vegan compost. She was particularly proud of her perfectly formed carrots, averaging 6 oz each and carrot-fly free. Stores of vegetables, fruit and protein crops such as haricot beans lay neatly packed away in sufficient quantities to provide most of the food needed to see the Jannaways through the winter.<\/span> &#8211; in full\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mclveganway.org.uk\/kathleen_jannaway.html\" title=\"Kathleen said: &quot;I think it is important to show people how much of our food is home produced&quot;. I don\u2019t grow the wheat for bread, though I do have enough land and could do so. And of course, the soya we use is imported. Haricot beans are an alternative I use in many dishes, but I would like to see a lot more work put into developing different plant protein crops which would grow successfully in this country. &quot;If I\u2019ve done anything in my life I am really proud about, it is the number of people who\u2019ve gone over to veganic growing following our example. There is now rapidly growing interest in the vegan way of life. People are realizing that the dairy industry involves even more animal suffering than meat production. Calves are taken from their mothers at birth and sent either straight to the butcher or to the veal units (5,000 calves a week are exported from England, mainly to the Dutch and French Veal units) so that their milk can be used for humans. Cows, after being subjected to continuous frustrated pregnancies, are slaughtered as soon as their milk yield drops. Most eggs come from battery systems end even free-range methods involve the slaughter of cocks (fertile eggs are necessary to produce hens but half hatch into male chicks) and of hens as soon as their profitable laying period is past. Only veganism brings release from dependence on butchery. We cannot build a more compassionate world on the foundation of the slaughterhouse.<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"During_the_last_33_years_members_of_the_Vegan_Society_have_shown_that_animal_products_are_unnecessary_for_human_health_that_it_is_possible_to_rear_happy_healthy_intelligent_families_and_to_live_full_and_active_lives_to_a_vigorous_old_age_on_plant_products_only_Recently_there_has_been_growing_awareness_of_the_hazard_of_dairy_products_as_food_for_humans_especially_with_regard_to_heart_and_circulatory_diseases_and_some_cancers_Animal_product_free_diets_have_been_used_successfully_to_cure_infantile_eczema_asthma_chronic_upper_respiratory_infections_acne_vulgaris_maturity_onset_diabetes_hypertension_hyperlipidemias_post-coronary_thrombosis_angina_ulcerative_colitis_diverticulitis_migraine_and_hemorrhoids\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #800080;\">During the last 33 years, members of the Vegan Society have shown that animal products are unnecessary for human health, that it is possible to rear happy, healthy, intelligent families and to live full and active lives to a vigorous old age on plant products only. Recently, there has been growing awareness of the hazard of dairy products as food for humans, especially with regard to heart and circulatory diseases and some cancers. Animal product free diets have been used successfully to cure infantile eczema, asthma, chronic upper respiratory infections, acne vulgaris, maturity onset diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemias, post-coronary thrombosis angina, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, migraine and hemorrhoids.<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"It_is_now_being_widely_recognized_that_animal_products_are_wasteful_of_the_basic_resources_needed_to_feed_the_growing_human_population_of_the_world_yet_Western_feeding_habits_and_Western_type_diseases_are_spreading_through_the_affluent_classes_in_the_%E2%80%9Cdeveloping_countries%E2%80%9D_thus_exacerbating_the_situation_of_the_poor_There_is_a_moral_obligation_to_check_this_trend_by_demonstrating_the_advantages_of_the_vegan_way\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #800080;\">It is now being widely recognized that animal products are wasteful of the basic resources needed to feed the growing human population of the world, yet Western feeding habits (and Western type diseases) are spreading through the affluent classes in the \u201cdeveloping countries\u201d thus exacerbating the situation of the poor. It is still strong &amp; very active eighty years later \u2013\u00a0\u00a0its primary objectives are to: \u2013<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Collect all of Ernest Bell\u2019s book &amp; non-book works and make them easily accessible to everyone.<\/li>\n<li>Collect the literature of vegetarianism and all the other humanitarian movements in which Ernest Bell was so deeply involved.<\/li>\n<li>Assist students and scholars in their research.<\/li>\n<li>Introduce all aspects of Ernest Bell\u2019s life, including his writings, campaign work, influences and his circle of friends.<\/li>\n<li>Undertake our own research into missing aspects of Ernest Bell\u2019s life and work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We already have more than 300 pieces of Ernest Bell\u2019s own writings.<\/p>\n<p>We are also actively building a collection of examples of promotional material, campaign material, fundraising &amp; marketing activities etc. \u2013 related to: \u2013<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>veg(etari)an products.<\/li>\n<li>veg(etari)an books &amp; other publications.<\/li>\n<li>veg(etari)an\u00a0organisations.<\/li>\n<li>veg(etari)an businesses.<\/li>\n<li>animal rights organisations.<\/li>\n<li>animal rights publications.<\/li>\n<li>humanitarian organisations.<\/li>\n<li>humanitarian publications.<\/li>\n<li>rambling clubs run by members of the above groups &amp; related publications.<\/li>\n<li>the work of Richard St. Barbe Baker &amp; the \u2018Men of the Trees\u2019 organization &amp; its many sub-branches.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>There are currently more than 2,000 items in the Ernest Bell Library.<\/p>\n<p>We will complete the\u00a0cataloging of the collection as &amp; when adequate funds are available.<\/p>\n<p>It is long past time for the library to go online!<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u201cI have little doubt that the proposal for the establishment of an Ernest Bell Library,\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>which would specialize in humanitarian and progressive literature,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>a<\/strong><strong>nd so form a sort of centre for students, will meet with a wide response.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>Henry S.
