Lecturers will also find it of use and could use the three words upon it as a splendid text from which to speak. ~ &#8211; from an article talking about the original version of the badge &#8211;\u00a0source<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-4'><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/london-vegetarian-society-pin\/#Frank_Wyatt_was_Secretary_of_the_%E2%80%98London_Vegetarian_Society_during_these_years_On_October_10th_1940_the_offices_of_the_Society_at_6_Duke_Street_Adelphi_London_WC2_were_destroyed_by_German_bombs_Frank_was_at_his_desk_was_injured_also_badly_shocked\" class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-23\"  >Frank Wyatt was Secretary of the &#8216;London Vegetarian Society&#8217; during these years. On October 10th 1940 the offices of the Society at 6 Duke Street, Adelphi, London, W.C.2, were destroyed by German bombs. Frank was at his desk &amp; was injured &amp; also badly shocked.<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-4'><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/london-vegetarian-society-pin\/#In_the_1930s_early_1940s_almost_every_issue_of_the_monthly_publication_%E2%80%98The_Vegetarian_News_had_editorial_pieces_news_pieces_by_Frank_Wyatt_%E2%80%93_usually_with_just_his_initials_%E2%80%98F_W_The_Ernest_Bell_Library_has_around_30_issues_of_%E2%80%98The_Vegetarian_News\" class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-24\"  >In the 1930s &amp; early 1940s, almost every issue of the monthly publication &#8216;The Vegetarian News&#8217; had editorial pieces &amp; news pieces by Frank Wyatt &#8211; usually with just his initials &#8216;F. W,&#8217;. Members abstained from alcohol and tobacco as well as being vegetarian. This was followed by the London Food Reform Society in 1877. A young doctor named T R Allinson (now immortalised on a popular brand of wholemeal bread) was a member of the Society.<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-4'><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/london-vegetarian-society-pin\/#Later_the_Society_dropped_the_word_%E2%80%9CLondon%E2%80%9D_from_its_title_and_became_the_National_Food_Reform_Society_This_led_to_some_antagonism_with_the_Vegetarian_Society_but_the_National_Food_Reform_Society_merged_with_the_Vegetarian_Society_in_1885_and_it_then_became_the_London_branch_of_the_Vegetarian_Society\" class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-31\"  >Later, the Society dropped the word &#8220;London&#8221; from its title and became the National Food Reform Society. This led to some antagonism with the Vegetarian Society, but the National Food Reform Society merged with the Vegetarian Society in 1885, and it then became the London branch of the Vegetarian Society.<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-4'><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/london-vegetarian-society-pin\/#Further_problems_followed_and_in_1888_the_London_branch_broke_away_from_the_Vegetarian_Society_and_formed_the_London_Vegetarian_Society_which_soon_flourished_as_a_second_national_society_The_President_was_Mr_Arnold_Hills_1857-1927_%E2%80%93_he_was_probably_President_of_the_various_Food_Reform_Societies_and_appears_to_have_been_connected_with_the_Memorial_Hall_which_was_owned_by_the_Congregationalist_Church_A_magazine_known_as_The_Vegetarian_was_brought_out_in_1889_by_Mr_Hills_as_an_independent_publication_to_run_alongside_the_LVS_%E2%80%93_much_more\" class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-32\"  >Further problems followed, and in 1888 the London branch broke away from the Vegetarian Society and formed the London Vegetarian Society, which soon flourished as a second national society. The President was Mr Arnold Hills (1857-1927) &#8211; he was probably President of the various Food Reform Societies and appears to have been connected with the Memorial Hall which was owned by the Congregationalist Church. A magazine known as The Vegetarian was brought out in 1889 by Mr Hills as an independent publication to run alongside the LVS. &#8211; much more.<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-4'><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/london-vegetarian-society-pin\/#%E2%80%A6%E2%80%A6-4\" class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-33\"  >\u2026\u2026<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-2'><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/london-vegetarian-society-pin\/#LVS_fobs_badges_newly_made_by_the_%E2%80%93_Hum-an-imal-Badge-Co\" class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-34\"  >LVS fobs &amp; Members abstained from alcohol and tobacco as well as being vegetarian. This was followed by the London Food Reform Society in 1877. A young doctor named<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Allinson\" title=\"Thomas Richard Allinson (19 May 1858 \u2013 1918) was a British doctor, dietetic reformer, businessman and journalist. He was a proponent of whole grain (or &quot;wholemeal&quot;) bread consumption. His name is still used today for a bread popular in Europe, Allinson bread.\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\"> T R Allinson<\/a> (now immortalised on a popular brand of wholemeal bread) was a member of the Society.<\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Later_the_Society_dropped_the_word_%E2%80%9CLondon%E2%80%9D_from_its_title_and_became_the_National_Food_Reform_Society_This_led_to_some_antagonism_with_the_Vegetarian_Society_but_the_National_Food_Reform_Society_merged_with_the_Vegetarian_Society_in_1885_and_it_then_became_the_London_branch_of_the_Vegetarian_Society\"><\/span>Later, the Society dropped the word &#8220;London&#8221; from its title and became the National Food Reform Society. This led to some antagonism with the Vegetarian Society, but the National Food Reform Society merged with the Vegetarian Society in 1885, and it then became the London branch of the Vegetarian Society.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Further problems followed, and in 1888 the London branch broke away from the Vegetarian Society and formed the London Vegetarian Society, which soon flourished as a second national society. The President was Mr<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arnold_Hills\" title=\"Arnold Frank Hills (12 March 1857 \u2013 7 March 1927) was an English businessman, sportsman, philanthropist, and promoter of vegetarianism.\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow\"> Arnold Hills<\/a> (1857-1927) &#8211; he was probably President of the various Food Reform Societies and appears to have been connected with the Memorial Hall which was owned by the Congregationalist Church. A magazine known as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/vegetarian-marketing-a-promotional-flyer-123-years-old\/\" title=\"\u201c\u2026 Full of the neophyte\u2019s zeal for vegetarianism I decided to start a vegetarian club in my locality, Bayswater. I invited Sir Edwin Arnold, who lived there, to be Vice-President. Dr. Oldfield who was Editor of The Vegetarian became President. I would now suggest that it would be a most helpful step if individuals who favour this idea would lend their names to strengthen the appeal that will have to be made to some Public Institution for the use of a room, and if Societies and Journals would also express their agreement. Such a Memorial would be so personally suitable, in view of Mr. Bell\u2019s many and long continued services, and so valuable to the cause of humane progress in general, that it is difficult to see how any objection could be made to it: the sole question is whether the initial difficulties can be overcome.
