\u00a0&#8216;The Open Door&#8217; magazine.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Diana Belais &#8211; launched the New York Anti-Vivisection Society\u00a0in 1908 &#8211; an article &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/query.nytimes.com\/gst\/abstract.html?res=9B0CE0D8173EE233A25756C1A9649C946997D6CF\" title=\"An enthusiastic mass meeting held last night in Carnegie Lyceum under the auspices of the New York Anti-Vivisection Society for the purpose of urging the passage of anti-vivisection legislation by the State Legislature...... \"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer external nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We love the images artwork which Diana Belais &amp; friends commissioned \/ created for this campaign.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Note \u2013 Diana Belais (1858 -1944) \u2013 married to\u00a0David Belais (1863 \u2013 1933) of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.langantiques.com\/university\/index.php\/Belais\" title=\"An interesting aside, David Belais my have been better known for his efforts on behalf of animals as the founder (in 1904) of the Humane Society of New York. He served without pay as its President until his death. In 1929 he was also instrumental in establishing the first free animal clinic at the Humane Society headquarters.\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer external nofollow\">Belais Manufacturing Co.<\/a>\u00a0Published record of her antivivisection activity appears to have started in 1889, \u00a0when she was 30. \u00a0\u00a0She founded\u00a0The Open Door, an animal welfare magazine, in 1895, and continued publishing it until 1938.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Her husband, \u00a0jeweler David Belais, in 1893 founded the Humane Society of New York (formally incorporated in 1904).\u00a0~ In 1917, a 55 year old jeweler and animals rights activist from Manhattan, by the name of David Belais, was the first to patent a new type of gold never before seen. For the many years that followed, into the late 20\u2019s, it was known \u201c14k Belais\u201d or \u201cBelais metal.\u201d We now know it as white gold. ~<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">More about them\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.animals24-7.org\/2009\/10\/12\/the-1st-church-of-animal-rights-tried-to-launch-the-movement-in-1921\/\" title=\"Diana Belais also presaged to some extent the PETA use of eroticism to promote the animal cause. A November 1912 fundraiser for the New York Anti-Vivisection Society held at the Hotel Plaza created a particular stir. \u201cThe identity of two society women who appeared in Greek and modern dances was not disclosed,\u201d said the New York Tribune, but two young women who assisted Blais and may have been the dancers were Maud R. Ingersoll, then 30, and E.
