{"id":1017,"date":"2009-12-05T08:20:19","date_gmt":"2009-12-05T16:20:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/?p=1017"},"modified":"2009-12-05T08:20:19","modified_gmt":"2009-12-05T16:20:19","slug":"warm-beverages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/warm-beverages\/","title":{"rendered":"Warm beverages"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1020\" title=\"soychoco\" src=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/soychoco.jpg\" alt=\"soychoco\" width=\"460\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/soychoco.jpg 460w, https:\/\/www.happycow.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/soychoco-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As the temperature drops in some parts of the world&#8230;. it&#8217;s about that time to start a higher consumption of warm beverages. \u00a0 Sure there are so many pre-made and made-for-you options in retail outlets, but warm beverages made at home are even more heart-warming!<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a list of a few warm beverages you can easily whip up for your guests, friends, relatives, and loved ones:<\/p>\n<p>1. <strong><em>Hot chocolate<\/em>!<\/strong> This is every choco-a-holic&#8217;s favorite.\u00a0 There is of course a great variety of vegan &#8220;milks&#8221; to choose from, so experiment away!\u00a0 Here are a few suggestions: hemp milk, almond milk, hazelnut milk, soy milk, oat milk, and rice milk.\u00a0 The trick to good hot chocolate is to use the highest quality chocolate you can find.\u00a0 I prefer unsweetened chocolate or bittersweet chocolate, that way you can adjust the sweetness.\u00a0 Melt some of this chocolate in a double boiler or in the microwave and gradually add some hot vegan milk.\u00a0 Whisk until it is combined.\u00a0 Add more hot vegan milk to change the degree of chocolatey-goodness.\u00a0 If necessary, add some sweetener (agave syrup, maple syrup, evaporated cane juice, dark brown sugar, etc.).\u00a0 For a tropical hint, add some coconut milk!\u00a0 If plain chocolate is too plain for you, consider the wide assortment of flavors that can be added: vanilla, orange, and mint might be the best extracts or syrups.\u00a0 Add in a dash of cinnamon if you want more spice.\u00a0 If you&#8217;d prefer an alcoholic version, add a shot of your favorite cordial\/ liqueur.\u00a0 No matter how you mix it up, it will be wonderful!<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong><em>Spiced cider<\/em>! <\/strong> Find your favorite apple cider or apple juice, or make your own!\u00a0 I&#8217;ve had some tasty pear cider too that would work well with this concept.\u00a0 Also, you can mix up a cocktail of an apple base with some tart berry additions like cranberry, cherry, etc.\u00a0 Find a spice ball and fill with your favorite spices: whole cloves, allspice berries, cinnamon sticks broken into pieces, orange peel, etc.\u00a0 Simmer the juice and\/or cider on the stove with the spice ball for at least 15-20 minutes for the flavors to develop.\u00a0 Serve with a swizzle stick of cinnamon!\u00a0 Yum!<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong><em>Chai<\/em>!<\/strong> So often these commercial mixes include a wonderful assortment of spices that you can easily mix up at home.\u00a0 Find your favorite basic tea, whether it&#8217;s a black tea like English Breakfast or Ceylon or Assam, or a green tea like Dragonwell or Sencha&#8211;you decide!\u00a0 Fill a saucepan with water and bring the water to a gentle simmer.\u00a0 In the meantime, fill a spice ball with some spices like cardamom, black pepper, cloves, ginger, and allspice.\u00a0 Add the tea in teabags or in a tea strainer.\u00a0 Add the spices and simmer for 15-20 minutes.\u00a0 Remove the tea.\u00a0 Add in some vegan milk if desired and warm the whole mixture.\u00a0 If necessary to sweeten, mix it all up while still in the saucepan.\u00a0 As you experiment with different spices, feel free to reuse some of the combinations with slight tweaks.\u00a0 Yum!<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong><em>Vegan nog<\/em>!
