Vegan options but not overly ethical

Posted on 04 / 07 / 2015

Whole Foods has always been seen as a vegan mecca because of the number of vegan options they carry but they've gone downhill as of late. Their hot tables no longer have a vegan or vegetarian symbol on the description (they got lazy and to be fair, they usually got it wrong), they've started to shrink their vegan product offerings (fewer hummus and dip options, etc.) and their staff often have no idea what the word "vegan" even means. Plus their prepared vegan food is awful (the veggie burger patty they make themselves tastes like wet flour). Finally, their desire to be "cool" has seen them add rabbit meat to their offering and their "Know where you dinner came from" campaign was horrible and showed a woman holding a live chicken lovingly. A big fail on that one. Just don't want in to Whole Foods thinking it's going to be this great vegan venture and you'll be OK; it's still filled with dead animals every left, right and centre (no matter how "humanely" they were treated).

Pros: Significant vegan options, Organic (doesn't necessarily mean vegan), Vegan hot table options: read ingredient
Cons: Rabbit Meat!, Poor signage and vegan notifications, Uneducated staff & overpriced

Whole Foods

Posted on 09 / 29 / 2012

I was delighted to find a Whole Foods when I was in Toronto for business - I ended up picking some items up from here. This Whole Foods is at the bottom level of a small building. They carry typical vegan items and I didn't really find anything else special. I'd say this location is average.

Vegan Cakes!

Posted on 03 / 08 / 2011

I try to support Panacea and other veg-oriented health food stores in the city as much as I can, but periodic visits to Whole Foods are rewarding.

-Lemon Poppy Seed Cake: moist, heavy and delish.
-Chocolate Cake: rich, decadent and cheap.
-365 Organic products: cheap eco products, many of which are plant-based/vegan

-Anything in the VEGA line or other meal replacement powders/bars: You can pay $80 for Garden of Life Raw Meal here or $53-60 at Green Post in Kensington Market
-Any product that you can find elsewhere in the city (like at Panacea for example): Whole Foods doesn't need your money as much as smaller stores do

I travel to Toronto twice a year and always stop at Whole Foods, because they have things that I can't get in Detroit, even though there are 3 Whole Foods in my area.
