Vegan Friendly Pit Stop in San Mateo

It definitely gets “real” in this Whole Foods parking lot! There are various shops and clinics so it gets busy, bring your patience! Once inside, so much to select from!

Highly recommend this place as a pit stop along the 101, clean facilities and wide selection of vegan goodies. Today post-hike I wanted an ice cream sandwich and found they now carry vegan cotton candy in reusable containers! Can’t wait to try them!

They also have plenty of indoor/outdoor seating if you can’t wait to enjoy your treats! It is spendy (expensive) especially for speciality items.

Pros: Vegan Options (produce + speciality), Clean/large facilities

Cons: Spendy

Excellent Vegan range

Great range of vegan products from donuts, ravioli, vegan cheese, frozen foods, bulk bin items, marshmallows, and many more. Not my main place to grocery shop but good for getting speciality vegan items I can’t get elsewhere like Parmesan cheese or coconut cool whip.

Pros: Good vegan selection. Donuts!

Cons: Meat/fish section stinks

Delicious vegan donuts, good choice of vegan produc

FOR EATING
They offer a great variety of vegan donuts at good prices (1.5$ per piece). Don't miss the chocolate donutes, madness!
They offer vegan burritos and sandwiches/wrapes, for moderate but affordable price. The burritos are ok and fresh, but the sandwich and wrap I tried once were bland and the tofu was old..
For the warm buffet unfortunately they have few vegan options. Cold buffet has a lot of vegan options but it's very expensive.
Always have a vegan soup and a vegetarian option.

GROCERIES
Lots of produce, vegan products, vegan cosmetics and detergents, also some stuff you can't get anywhere else in the area (eg: nutritional yeast).
This is where I buy most of the time the vegan household products and cosmetics, when I don't get them at Trader Joe's.
Some specialty products are expensive, and also the fruits and veggies are more expensive than for example at Trader Joe's.
Products of their own brand 365 are very good priced and good quality. Also bulk products are fairly priced, but check before buying, as some of them sit around a lot.. while others are fresh and replaced daily (you can ask to taste).

Pros: Bulk products at good prices, Delicious chocolate donuts, Own brand 365 good price and quality

Cons: Expensive fruits and veggies, Few warm buffet vegan options

Non organic salad bar at organic salad bar prices.

The Whole Foods in San Mateo charges $7.99 a pound for their salad bar, same as the WF in Los Altos and Cupertino. However, unlike those WFs, this one does not have organic produce in the salad bar. Thus, I think the $7.99 price per pound is unjustified. I think the Whole Foods in Palo Alto also has an organic salad bar for $7.99 a pound.

There are some vegan options in the hot foods bar such as channa masala (a chickpea Indian dish) and the deli. Tasty but a little too spicy. The vegan options are not labelled as vegan, so you have to take the trouble to read all the ingredients. The only vegan salad dressing was the balsamic vinegrette, which contained sugar. The channa masala contained sugar as well.

There are also vegetable burritos that appear vegan, but the line was so long I didn't check. Unlike the WF in Palo Alto, there is no vegan chocolate pudding in the prepared foods section.

Pros: Vegan Options

Cons: Salad Bar is non-organic, Difficult to avoid sugar.
