Been shopping there for 18 years.
Cons: Very cramped aisles., Problem with storage in hot weather., No soy yogurt.
Been shopping there for 18 years.
Like the title says, there is so much meat here! Way more than the veg! And it's super crowded--checkout takes a long time. Despite that, they're still a really good store for vegetarians thanks to their size and range. I would have rated them higher if they weren't just a tad overpriced. The Wainwright Dairy milk is $7.00! It's cheaper where I live in Alachua so why drive to Gainesville.
I got vegan butte and, marshmallows and lots of fresh fruits & veggies. They had really cheap nice plants too. My only complaint is that the aisles are a bit small so it was crowded.
Went to Wards for the first time today and I was pleased to see vegan items that I would have a hard time finding any where else locally like vegan yogurt and a beautiful array of tempeh. Everything is local and the fruit is delicious! I agree with another reviewers comments on the meat section, and it does boast its grass fed cow meat and milk. That was disturbing and upsetting, but a place like Wards is going in the right direction and offering great meat alternatives. over all they made a regular customer out of me with great food and friendly staff.
As a college student, and a vegan, I always have to consider food cost. Wards may not be fully vegan, but they do have the best prices on fresh organic local veggies. I am consistently amazed by the quality selection of local fruit and vegetables that Wards offers. Wards also carries a lot of vegan specialty items like vegan tortellini, Mouskowitz Cashew Cream Cheese, and Tofurky "hot" Pockets. Great selection of organic coffee and vegan/organic wines. The most expensive vegan wine is still under $10! Oh, and its the only place in town where you can buy Sweet & Sara Vegan marshmallow products. ^.^
This is my favorite grocery store in Gainesville. It's the place to go for produce, vegan food products (except Gardein is noticeably absent), vegan hair and beauty products, delicious beer and good, cheap wine.
Lots of vegetarian/vegan/organic/local/natural items. Very nice atmosphere and the staff seems really happy to work there.
While Ward's does have an extensive meat department, the store's setup makes it easy to avoid this section.
You can't deny the amazing selection this store offers as far as fruits, vegetables and bulk foods go. Super cheap tofu, too. I love this store.
Wards has the best fruit and veg section in the area, also a big bulk foods section, but these are dwarfed by their absolutely massive red meat section! They are known as the leading meat supermarket. To even refer to them as "vegetarian-friendly" is a gross exaggeration. There is nothing vegetarian-friendly about their 60-foot long meat section and big butcher department. Many of us are so used to shopping in markets that are full of meat that we are in denial about it. Wards is a supermarket with a bigger than average meat section and a good fruit and bulk section, that's all. If you don't mind the meat views and smells, this is a good place for you. If you want to limit your interaction (and by extrapolation your complicity with it)with the meat world, go elsewhere and shop with people who share your views, not those who simply want to profit from them.
if you're looking for a health food store, like vitamins and the lot, go to mother earth. but if youre looking for a natural grocery store, with reasonably priced organic produce and bulk foods, SHOP HERE!!! not only does wards have a better selection of bulk items than mother earth, but its so much cheaper (1-3 dollars a pound less). i love wards so much. everything i need is right in this store. the staff is super nice and friendly and always seem to be in a good mood. yeah, ok, the big meat section kinda sucks, but its sooo easy to avoid. theres a clear path you can take to avoid walking past. its really not so disturbing.
now dont get me wrong, i also shop at mother earth, but i only get things there that i cant find at wards (organic makeup, vitamins, etc.) but i cant afford to shop there. being a newlywed with all kinds of bills, i have to shop sensibly. and wards helps me out. low prices for natural and organic items that my family needs. you'll love it here :]
Wards is a great place to shop for vegetarian items. Wards is an old fashioned grocery store with a great loose/bulk natural food area. They have a great fresh produce selection. They do have a meat row, but it is easy enough to just avoid it. Overall it is cheaper than chain grocery stores. Wards stocks locally made tempeh, and has a good selection of tofu and packaged tempeh. The bulk section has nuts, veggie chips, and lots of granola. It is a charming little store, that fills most needs
