pleasant surprise

4 Posted on 11 / 21 / 2012

We found this place by accident while walking through the city and spent the next 45min looking at all the awesome products here. Took home a big bag of stuff (mostly unknown to us) to try :) Almost everything seems to be vegan, the only exceptions being eggs and some condensed milk. Definitely worth doing some groceries here!

Pros: huge range of products, low prices
Cons: products from far, not sustainable

Veggie Asian meat store!!

I was completely overwhelmed when I walked into this shop. Besides all the usual condiments such as soya sauce and sweet things (e.g. sesame- and peanut-based treats), this shop has walls of freezers full of frozen fake meats, every type imaginable. Usefully, most of the ingredients appear in English on the products, so it's easy to figure out which ones are and aren't vegan. There were chicken drumsticks, tuna steaks, legs of ham, prawns, whole fish, etc. The novelty! They also do a variety of dried TVP products, noodles, some veg, etc. I found the pricing here very reasonable.

The guy working there explained that his family runs the store, and that, had I come during the winter months, they would be selling hot take-away food. Eventually, I had to ask him for recommendations as there were just too many products to choose from.

I bought the salmon, ready-to-eat duck, and some ready-to-eat foil-packed bean curd (this type of bean curd is heavy on MSG buts sooo nice when you're travelling). The duck was tasty, and my friend and I cooked the salmon in the oven at home, baked in some soya cream. It didn't quite have that fish taste, but it was really tasty in its own way, and left me wanting to return to Toko Sie San to try more products.
