Not to be Missed

5 Posted on 02 / 10 / 2008

Very basic and informal buffet setup, with an excellent selection of (mostly, if not all vegan) dishes. Most of the food is of the mock meat variety, extremely tasty and served at a decent temperature (not always the case at buffet places).

It's also incredibly cheap, and very popular with the locals. The staff don't speak much English, but being a point-at-what-you'd-like buffet, this doesn't present too many problems.

The place is clean enough and the staff are friendly, but don't expect silver service - this is budget dining all the way.

Can't wait to go back.

Pros: Very cheap, Great selection of dishes
Cons: Some communication difficulties

Simple place - "yummy" food

Very popular mainly vegan "no frills" eating place. This joint has my deep respect - low, low prices - clean enough for me but "beat" looking. Friendly & dedicated crew from 16 to 70+ years of age many of whom are vegan - owned by a lady lawyer - her office entrance is at #198. I never use the menu - I prefer to select from the buffet counter which is continuously being restocked from the kitchen at the rear. Best for breakfasts, lunches & early diners - the selection becomes quite thin after 6 p.m. Instant service - 40+ different traditional Viet Nam style dishes for eating in / take away - has no European style dishes. Seating at shared stainless steel tables / counters. Retail area at the very front left selling mainly vegan snacks / sauces / tinned & packaged "mock meats". Customers are a mix of local office workers / local residents / senior citizens - also many college students eat there every day. Some of the diners may greet you in English to express their wonder & appreciation that you are eating vegetarian food - this really "bugs" some frazzled backpackers who mistakenly connect the friendly innocent approaches with the "street hustlers" in the busier parts of Saigon - if you are not in the mood to talk just give a smile. Landmarks. The towering "Central Park Office Building" is 4 buildings to the left. French style Catholic church with tall pointed spire is one block to the right. Just a few minutes walk from Bui Vien / Pham Ngu Lao across the park.

Pros: No smoke, No vendors, Great value
Cons: Winds down early

Disgusting!!

2 Posted on 01 / 25 / 2007

Maybe it's unfair, because we went at the end of the day, but after trekking a ways to get here, we were confronted by the dirtiest place we've ever been. It was truly disgusting, and the food didn't look much better, with oil covering most of the dishes, and all of them looking dreadfully unappetizing. Needless to say, we left without eating. I would give it zero happy cows, but somehow that is not an option on my computer.

Cons: dirty, disgusting
