Offers vegan options but serves Foie Gras?

Posted on 08 / 25 / 2013

I was excited to see a vegan option out by my small town and was making plans to have dinner. Looking through the menu however I changed my mind. It is a bit pricey though it would be ideal for a special occasion. What I find most disturbing is that they serve Foie Gras. I mean this place actually doesn't "get it". Are they simply offering vegan options to cash in on the trend or because they truly are respectful of vegans? I certainly don't expect the world to go vegan because I am but to serve a product that is not only immensely cruel but equates to serving liver disease on a platter is disgusting. No self respecting vegetarian or vegan should support a business such as this. I will not patronize this business until this dish of cruelty is removed from the menu.

Worth the price

The Root is a rare place in the desolate wasteland of fast food restaurants known as White Lake MI. Don't let the fact that it's in a strip mall turn you's an upscale place with clean-lined, modern decor, but no need to wear your Sunday best (it's White Lake, after all).

The menu is somewhat limited, but there is always a specific vegan option. They have now added a Vegan Tasting Menu, which is a 4 course vegan meal to which you can add a wine or beer pairing. The staff has also indicated that if you don't like the vegan option on the menu, the chef is willing to whip up something else. I've had a green tomato tart and the pumpkin pot pie, both of which were excellent, and clearly not afterthoughts to the menu. They also have a complete bar, with many local beverages and inventive cocktails.

Prices are a bit high, but you are getting high quality ingredients that are locally sourced as much as possible. On weekend nights, reservations are recommended.

Pros: Vegan option always available, Nice decor
Cons: Pricey
