If you didn't know about Sweet Themez in advance, as a vegan, it's likely that you'd keep on walking your merry way down 18th St. Conveniently, though, they have a sidewalk easel that mentions there are vegan choices to spread the good word. The skeptical vegan may ignore that though, thinking: if it's not the DC vegan bakery, why bother? Well, the skeptical vegan would miss out and then I could have more cupcakes.
They literally have at least half a dozen vegan cupcakes each day, and they rotate the selection. The website shows you all the creations they have made in the past. They do custom cakes too, which are lovely to look at. How do they taste though, those cupcakes in a non-vegan bakery? They stand on their own two feet. Mind you, I only had half a dozen different ones (chocolate w pb frosting, strawberry w sberry frosting, vanilla, coconut lemon, carrot and cookies and cream), but, they were all delightful. The frosting isn't too heavy or too airy, but just right. The cupcakes themselves had some cake that was better than other cake in terms of texture and moistness. I am not sure if it is a function of the recipe or perhaps being around in the bakery longer - i.e. dry from age rather than by design. Still, I found myself trying to scrape and pick up all the crumbs.
I can't wait to go back and see what they have next (red velvet, pumpkin, spice, blueberry?!)! At $2.50 each cupcake, it's a fair price for a half-dozen (cheaper when buying 6 vs. unit price less than 6). I also appreciate that they say they can make any non-vegan cupcake vegan! Cool.
Go! It's great after a nearby vegetarian meal.
