I made my 5th or 6th visit to Sweet Pea Cafe around 3:15 PM last Sunday afternoon (3/29/15), with my wife and son, as is usually the case, but I have also taken my grandchildren there as well on another occasion. I ordered the Tempeh Reuben with sweet potato fries and a lemonade. The food, as I have experienced previously, was delicious. Serving size was right. I find the price reasonably okay, but this time I felt a little unhappy about the fact that I was being expected to give a tip before I had been served. At this cafe you pay up front as soon as you order and before you sit down, and I'm okay with that. But as you are paying, the credit card machine throws up a screen giving you three options for a tip, the lowest of which is 15%. I normally give a tip anyway, so I just tapped the 15% option and paid. Our food was served promptly and it was good. We did, however, find the music being played unpleasant, and asked for it to be changed to something lighter and less abrasive. We were offered the option of sitting outside, or listening to another version of the same type of music, at which point we chose to just accept it. At least the volume was turned down. I'm sad to say this experience made up our minds that we will not be going to Sweet Pea again. Part of an enjoyable experience eating out is the ambiance, and when there is what is to us unpleasant music being played over the speakers in the establishment, that obviously will have a negative impact. So in summary I would suggest that management review their policy on tipping, and allow customers to tip after their meal. Secondly, perhaps discuss with employees that their choice of music may be unpalatable to the clientele, and in a business like this the customer must come first if there is a request for it to be changed and there are no other customers whose preferences might be different. The food, however, was great, and that has to be acknowledged.
