Great juice, lovely staff, disappointing food

2 Posted on 05 / 20 / 2014

I went to Surrey's Café especially to try their Vegan French Toast, which I had read about in vegbaker's review (below). Disappointingly, they no longer make it. The waitress was kind and helpful and suggested the Tofu Breakfast Platter, and also said that any of the egg dishes could probably be substituted with tofu. I tried the Huevos Rancheros with tofu. It came out very quickly, but the beans were lukewarm and the tofu was not at it's best. Service was friendly, warm, and polite. The freshly-squeezed juice I had was delicious! One last negative...I was swatting away fruit flies whilst eating - not particularly appetizing!

Pros: Service, Juices
Cons: Fruit-fly problem, Disappointing food

Vegan french toast!

I absolutely love the vegan French toast here! And the avocado pesto sandwich is delicious, you can add tofu, but it's filling without it as well. Cash only, but ATM right inside. You may have to wait in line, but there's one uptown and one in the Garden District if you get impatient!
Yummy fresh juices also!

Pros: vegan french toast
Cons: cash only

Great for brunch in Garden District

Cute place with filling food. We had tofu platter (teriyaki style tofu strips with rice & veg), soup, hash browns (roasted potatoes), avocado mash (guacamole), and fresh squeezed orange-grapefruit-ginger juice. All excellent. They also have sandwiches & other vegan options.

Pros: lots of vegan options clearly marked, good service, cute place

Good

We went to the 4800 blk twice for breakfast. Good service, good food. One of the better meals we've had in NOLA thus far. Also- great coffee, not skimpy on the refills. I do wish they had more vegan options. Vegan pancakes would be nice.

Pros: Great service- friendly staff, Good food, Bottomless Coffee Cup- bless yall
Cons: Eh? more vegan options

Great area, great charm, great service, great vegan food! Several vegan entrees and sides, and delicious, fresh-squeezed juices. Highly recommend.

In NOLA for a week; had breakfast there 3 times!

They have vegan pain perdu, a tofu dish, and vegan migas. I had the vegan migas twice-amazing. The third time I went, they had run out of tofu, so I had their potatoes (great), vegan black beans, and "avocado mash" (which is just guac, really). It's a cute place!

Pros: VEGAN MIGAS, Cute place, Great service
Cons: Small, gets busy, May run out of tofu, Not too many vegan options

tofu scramble blew socks off

4 Posted on 01 / 08 / 2011

Tofu scramble is something I cook alot at home and am always delighted to see on a menu... in short, I've eaten more than my fair share of tofu scramble. At Surrey's the dish was amazing and original -- some delicious combination of savory and sweet that I did not expect, with a generous portion of tofu which is always welcome. It confused and delighted my taste buds and I completely devoured it without breathing very much :0).

Pros: good food, friendly staff
Cons: small, busy, cash only

Eh for Vegans

2 Posted on 08 / 20 / 2010

This place is a great breakfast place-unique, cozy and special. Vegetarians could fare pretty well here. Vegans, however, have limited options. 2 dishes-a Tofu Breakfast Platter and an Avocado Pesto Sandwich. Pretty sure their breads and usual pesto are not vegan. Want so much for this place to have more options-it's such a fun little place. Would love for vegan bread, pancakes, and regular pesto to be available. Earth Balance is easy to obtain and would be great to have on hand for vegans. Easier still is providing more vegan options-Whole Foods isn't too far away, y'all. For such an inventive place you'd think they could have more vegan dishes. Would give this place a LOT more business if they did but the 2 dishes can get old after awhile.

Pros: 2 Vegan Entrees, Hash Browns
Cons: Cash Only, Packed on Weekends, Only 2 vegan entrees
