Noodles! - Edit
Best pad Thai. All of their noodle dishes have been great. Tell them you’re vegan and they are happy to omit the egg and fish sauce from your order. If you ask for spicy then you best be ready because they’re not messing around.

All the flavour - Edit
We have ordered take out and sat in several times and the food is consistently delish. They are very accommodating in terms of making dishes vegan. Be sure and check out the spice chart as the spice levels are for real.

Staff Vegan Knowledgeable - Edit
Spring rolls and basil tofu rolls were terrific. We also got pad thai with tofu that is on the sweet side. Would love to go back for curry.

Large portions. Good flavour. - Edit
Did takeout noodle, tofu and veggies. They Have good range of veggie and vegan options. Portions are very large and tastes good. Can be a long wait for food to be cooked, so if taking out, it's best to call ahead.

Great Vegan Thai Food! - Edit
This place is excellent! Lots of different options and the staff is considerate of things like egg and fish oil in your food. They we also very friendly! Portions are very filling, so keep this in mind if you’re visiting and don’t have a fridge to store leftovers! We had the basil rolls, vegetable curry and Muslim curry...everything was delicious!

Best in Hilo - Edit
We live in Hilo and have tried all restaurants with vegan options and Sombats is hands down the best. The staff understands what vegan means so you can just ask for items vegan. If you order a vegetarian dish they will normally ask if eggs and fish sauce are ok (if not just mention no eggs no fish sauce to them). If you see something on the menu and aren’t sure if they can make vegan just ask, the staff is very friendly. Reservations are a good idea because they can get crowded. This place cannot be missed, we love it. Only not rating 5 because I cant.

Very good. - Edit
Glad this veg friendly place is here. They were very friendly and obliging. The place is small and seating is a bit tight, but worth the try. I enjoyed running through the pouring tropical rain to get to the front door. It was also nice that they have earlier island dinner hours.

Excellent Thai - Edit
We had a fantastic lunch at Sombat's. We had a small wait because there aren't many tables, but it was well worth it. We ordered the delicious spring rolls and Pad See Ew with tofu and no egg. We forgot to order it without the fish sauce, but the waiter actually asked us about it. Nice! We ordered it spicy and it was actually pretty spicy (usually it's never as hot as we like it). It was some of the best Thai food I've had in a long time. Highly recommended!

Friendly Atmosphere - Edit
Skip popular Ken's House of Pancakes, and visit Sombat's (right behind Ken's) instead! So glad I found Sombat's (from happycow)during my week in Hilo. The vegetable curry and the hot mamaki tea were excellent. My server explained mamaki to me and even took me to the little garden to show me a mamaki tree on premises. The owner visited my table and told me she used to be vegan, and fully understood and answered my questions about the menu. One night during my stay, I tried the cold beanthread noodles -- also very good -- and it was such a large portion I had leftovers (nominal charge for take-out container, but it's Hawaii!).

Awesome vegan-friendly Thai food! - Edit
My husband, our friend who ate with us, and I agree that Sombat's is one of the best Thai restaurants we have ever eaten at. Unlike Thai restaurants that used canned coconut milk and other canned and frozen ingredients, Sombat grows some of the foods she uses (all organically), and obtains the rest locally. Combine this with the fact that her recipes are awesome, and we have a delicious "do not miss if you're in Hilo" restaurant.
Read moreWe ordered the pineapple fried rice (made vegan) and the yellow curry, and another dish which I don't remember--all delicious. In addition to the tasty food, I appreciate that a vegan can choose from such a wide variety of Thai food by requesting other dishes be prepared vegan with tofu substituted for meat. Also it's helpful that they have ample parking at this restaurant.
Pros: Delicious, organic food., Vegan-friendly., Ample parking.
Cons: Not open Sundays.
