Breakfast
SJ express trains with buffet cars offer a vegan breakfast and vegan hot lunch/dinner. The breakfast consists of bread, vegan cheese, a tomato, yoghurt, apple juice, and coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. The lunch/dinner consists of a hot meal that changes each day plus a soft drink and hot drink of choice. Vegan meals are also gluten-free. To guarantee availability, these can be pre-ordered up to 24 hours prior to departure, either when booking tickets online, calling, or at any SJ travel office. Cashless.

Better breakfast than expected - Edit
The breakfast I got in 1 class was way better than I expected. Soygurt with muesli, apple juice made from 100% apples, pea "hummus", vegetables, jam, coffee.

Couple of vegan options - Edit
I pre-ordered the vegan menu as I didn't know how much vegan food would be in the bistro. The pre-ordered option was a grain salad with soy meat and spinach as well as vegan mayo. It was way too salty for my taste. Would not order this again. Also pre-ordering is not necessary as they have quite some vegan options available on the train. I think next time I would choose a wrap over this grain salad.

Vegan options - Edit
The vegan options on the SJ (Swedish rails) has become quite good and a lot better than one would expect from a train restaurant! During my last journey they had 3 options; one wrap, a falafel salad and a traditional Swedish “pannbiff” which I choose. Burger and sauce really tasty. Potatoes and veg ok.

Finally - Edit
While still far from a French train (!), SJ finally have some decent veggie options on their menu. The wraps are tasty!

Vegan options and oat milk - Edit
I was pleasantly surprised as they, in spite of not serving any warm food, still had a couple of vegan options (these are not clearly labeled as vegan, but vegetarian. Make sure to check the ingredients). These included a wrap with pea-based mince, vegan cheese, salsa, corn etc and a noodle dish. The wrap was fully ok. They even had small packages of oat milk for coffee and tea.

They stepped up! - Edit
They carry way more vegan stuff now in the Bistro cart. They used to only have this glass-noodle dish which was pretty good if you bought some cashews and mixed them in with the noodles. I was just now looking for it and they were sold out but they had this Pasta box with Vegan Mozzarella, beans and more mixed in with a chili soy sauce - I was happy with it! Also saw a Vegan wrap that I wanted to try for fun but pasta got me full enough.

Finally an onboard option - Edit
I pre-ordered the breakfast onboard the Stockholm to Malmö route. Having travelled with SJ over several years, I've always ignored the pre-booking food options, so I was pleasantly surprised to see the word vegan jump out at me from the page! You just take your ticket to the buffet car and collect the order, or of course you can go without pre-ordering, but I'm not sure how many meals they generally stock. The vegan breakfast had a container of plain yoghurt, a piece of bread, margarine, three pieces of vegan cheese a tomato, a small bottle of apple juice, and a hot drink. The cutlery and box are biodegradable, but there was rather a lot of unnecessary plastic which bothered me a bit. Otherwise the quality was great and it was some of the nicest vegan cheese I've ever had. For the price (69sek) I would have expected at least one more piece of bread, but then food on trains is always a little overpriced, so whilst it isn't the bet value, it's a good option to bear in mind when taking an early morning train or with tight connections that will make getting food difficult.

Pros: vegan and gluten free, simple to arrange
Cons: a little overpriced
